We all can say personal thanx to "Cansfield says the Ontario Trucking Association played a large role in pressuring the government to enforce mandatory speed limiters on Ontario highways." Does anybody knows - what's going to be next????? |

Looks like they're going to follow up on it.

They officially introduced the legislation 2 days ago |
If I recall from the earlier discussions they had on this, they intended to enforce it on out-of-province trucks, although I have no clue how the hell they intend to accomplish that. I can just imagine every truck crossing the Ambassor Bridge at Detroit/Windsor heading to the Husky Truckshop to have their limiters adjusted to 65mph.
It makes more sense to just enforce the existing speed limit than create this bureaucratic boondoogle. Most trucks on the 400-series roads (equivalent to the Interstates) run 105-115 clicks (65-70 mph) without incident or much attention from the cops. Most four wheelers travel a minium of 120 (72mph) and often at 140-150 (87-93mph). I'll agree to a limiter in trucks if they make it mandatory in cars. Or even better, skip the damn limiters for either one, set a maximum of 120 for everybody and bring back photo radar. You bust over 120 and u get a ticket, period, no matter what your driving. The real frustration up here is that the arsehole driving this plan is the president of the Ontario Trucking Association, a group that sure as hell doesn't represent the average driver or owner-operator. It's made up of mostly large interprovincial freight haulers who want to squeeze more profits out of reduced fuel consumption while bragging about what good corporate citizens they are. There was a good editorial piece in one of the trucking mags up here; if I can find it online, I'll post it (hopefully that's with the permission of the mods). Professor427 P.S. Just found this at OOIDA's site. http://www.ooida.com/action_alerts/2...d_limiters.htm |
Last few times I've been on the 401 they've been enforcing quite well, and I've noticed the cars have been going much slower. Trucks are going 105 as well.
|
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I've lived here all my 53 years and driven that road hundreds, if not thousands of times, and traffic certainly doesn't travel anywhere near 105km/h, especially in the London-Toronto portion of the 401.
I was just having this discussion on msn with someone else, and made the point that having trucks pass one another with a limiter will be like having elephants on the track during the Indy 500. To be fair, I don't like being blown off by some Billy BigRig doin' 140km/h either, but I'd rather he paid the price for his behaviour via a ticket, than all of us forced to act like rolling roadblocks. |
I don't know, I was in big smoke just a few days ago, and was shocked at how much slower everyone was going, four wheelers included.
I doubt the cars were going any faster then 120. |
Here's an earlier response to this initiative by OOIDA and its Canadian counterpart, OBAC. I thought Joanne Ritchie made some excellent points, even though it appears the provincial government didn't listen.

Does anybody knows - what's going to be next????? ...fuel hogs (DBA ' z hoods') being rounded up 2 B used as boat anchors? This is what happens when "WE" don't have the brains 2 do it OURSELVES! I have to admit, part of me actually wants them to pass this into law. What a fiasco it would be. It could literally take several....no many, many miles to complete a pass. The general public would be in an uproar.
Imagine the 500 hp truck with 10,000lbs on pulling to the left to pass on a hill at 105 as the 480 hp truck with 10,000lbs on stays in the right lane and slows to 104. They crest the hill side by side and roll down the other side together...the passing truck has to wait until the next hill to complete the pass. Brilliant! |
Yeah it will be nearly impossible to enforce I would imagine, remember the lines at the Blue Water bridge on 9/12?
It will however give me the right to turn down Canada loads now, although running across ON on my way home from Rochester was a nice quick trip though. I hope the plan does not work well and hope that it totally screws up the highways, because then our politicians can't say "see it works there we need it here". |

In a letter to the editor, someone wrote to Truck News and stated that "of the big pileups involving trucks recently, ALL of the trucks involved had limiters". If that's true, there goes the safety angle LOL. I can't believe it will ever happen. Even politicians aren't that stupid. It's just ridiculous. It's like going around the sun to get to the moon. There are other ways to slow the trucks down if they needed to be, which they don't as far as I can tell. |
For once I agree with Alan, I run Hamilton/Toronto to Mi steady and I run my cruise at 105-107 and I could count the amount of trucks that fly by on my hands every day. I know I pass more than pass me. Thjis law is just a feel good project for the OTA. There are still carriers out there stealing fuel surcharges but they don't want to tackle that problem because it's too hard for them and they won't be on the news bragging about how safety conscious they are.

Once? Awww, there goes my bubble where I thought I was a pretty agreeable guy.
