What's the deal with LTL freight on a 53 ft dry van?

I am doing 3 pickups in the Edmonton, Alberta area and as I discovered the carrier will pay me ... 6 cents per mile extra! All the LTL loads have their separate load numbers (a requirement for the $0.06 cpm bonus), so I'm making a killing :) 2200 miles from here to Toronto, ONT via Canada. I'm just curious: anyone knows how much shippers pay for LTL? At one stop I picked up only 2 skids but they still go 2200 miles. The carrier will probably get a lower pay than for picking up a truckload, right.? But seeing they're willing to pay me this bonus, they must be making good money.

Are you paid mileage, or %?

That is the main question right there! If you are paid by percentage, you should get a % of each LTL rate.

LTL is charged by deck space required for each order.

2 pallets require 4 feet of deck space. One roll of carper, if it is 12 feet long, requires 12 feet of deck space. One 6'X15' piece of equipment requires 15 feet of deck. LTL usually pay's very well, $$$ wise.

Very very few Canadian carriers pay percentage. I can only think of one locally, and it's a small outfit of 25 trucks.

One time I picked up 3 pallets in Laredo, Tx and pulled them to Louisville, KY. Total weight was about 800# .

They pay me in Cnd dollars (which are worth a little more than U.S. $ right now)

1.12 per mile for all miles - loaded and empty
1.30 if the load originates in ONT, Canada and goes to North-East USA
Plus fuel surchage

Our flatbed guys get paid by percentage which looks amazing on paper: 82% of the gross if you have your own trailer; and 75% of the gross if you pull the company flatbed. But when I started flatbedding hoping to make a kiling with this percentage pay, I quickly found out I had to do 200 mile deadhead at $0 pay and most loads were EXTREMELY cheap. Dispatch refused to disclose the rate when they sent you the load offer by satellite. The only time I was able to see the rate was on my pay statement - after the fact. So I switched back to dry van and I just discovered this LTL bonus of 6 cents per mile. If they only gave me a load to North-East USA with 3 pickups I could make 1.36 per mile. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to get a load like the one I'm doing now. I guess they give them to guys who have grown 5 ft beards driving trucks

Who do you work for?

BTW, be happy you're even getting a load out of Edmonton.

That sounds like a scam. I doubt you were seeing the actual $ numbers on the load.

Talk about a SCAM... I would NEVER. I mean NEVER pull a load on % without knowing what the gross pay is. I can't believe your company has guys leased on that are pulling loads, and dont even know what they are being paid until they get their statement????

Dad always told me "It takes all kinds" Guess that is True.

Yep.... that's why owner-operators that start in our flatbed division quit fairly quickly. I did it for a couple of months and then switched back to dry van. A lot of guys went to Scottlyn (reefers); one guy went to Mercer ... I'm still at MacKinnon because I don't have my own trailer. Once I get it, I'll quit too. Of course first I have to decide what trailer to get: flatbed, stepdeck or maybe RGN. I'm leaning towards a 53 ft stepdeck with ramps...

I never know what my pay is until I get my settlement, sure I have an idea, our loads are usually in the $3 a mile range, but I am never sure until I get my check.......really makes no difference in the end.

Well I suppose your case is a little diffrent.

You dont have to worry about your company booking $1.00 per mile broker loads and you getting
70% (No No) The only time I have ever worked on percentage was pulling a flatbed. The company I was leased to was good at this, therefore I refused to pull any load unless I knew what I was being paid.
