Should I become a freight broker?

I am driving my own truck right now and I was told that I should become a freight broker as well as having my own authority. Should I get it or not? What is the advantage to having both? All help appreciated.

Unless you plan on brokering freight I see no real advantage to getting your broker authority. It is just an extra expense that you may not want especially if you are driving a truck yourself. It is difficult to drive a truck, book your own loads and then try to solicit and book loads as a broker. I am not saying that it cannot be done, but for a one man operation it will be difficult to do well at both. Driving simply takes too much of your time to do justice to brokering. If you plan on putting a driver in the truck and concentrating on booking loads full time, then it might work for you. Why do you want to become a broker anyway?

why would you want to be a yellow bellied slime sucker anyway??

Just kidding....GMAN is right that would be alot of work. I think you would have to be one or the other.

Check out www.loadtraining.com They suggest you become a freight broker if you start dealing directly with shippers. Sooner or later you will have more freight than you can handle ... and that's when being a freight broker will come in handy: you can hire a driver to drive your truck while you work 4 hours day getting 15% commissions from loads you "sell" to other truckers. That's of course valid if you do want to expand and hire a driver/drivers and work DIRECTLY with shippers.
