Interesting New Schneider Program
I got a flyer in the mail yesterday from Schneider about a new Owner/Operator plan they are offering. It is 65% plus 100% of the FSC and any extras. But that is not the interesting part.
The interesting part is that you SELF DISPATCH. They have an internet load board with all loads listed, showing the exact amount to be paid to the truck, and you pick your own loads, dispatch yourself, and preplan as much as you want. This sort of sounds like Landstar, but better because NO AGENTS and lots more drop and hook. They claim an average of $1.30 to $1.35 per mile, total revenue on total miles loaded and empty. Check out the web site with demo of the load board and share your comments. www.schneiderjobs.com I really like the self-dispatch idea. I am currently pulling chemical tanker and getting about $1.45 gross revenue on all miles loaded and empty, but we are completely DEAD right now. November I only had about 6,000 miles for the entire month and December is looking worse. And would you believe the terminal manager just keeps hiring more drivers? |

As far as rates go, I would love to get $10.00 per mile for drop and hook dry van, but that is not going to happen. I like pulling chemical tanker at $1.45 but the rate is meaningless if there are no miles to run. The rate I mentioned for chemical tanker is based on my own calculation using hub miles. My carrier claims I am getting about $1.60, because they do not include all of the dead head miles, which can be a lot in the tanker business. According to Truckloadrate.com the national average for dry van is $1.46 + .34 FSC for a total of $1.80. It should not be too hard to stay on the good side of that average by staying out of Florida, the Northeast, and California. The good thing about a giant dry van carrier should be plenty of loads to pick from with minimal deadhead. Anyway, it is something to think about while I sit around wasting time because I have no work. |

There was a big advertising push by JB Hunt summer of 2006 claiming they were paying O/O's $1.50 per mile based on percentage. Several people I know went over there and signed on. Guess what? They actually made closer to $1.30 per mile. Some stayed despite the lies, others left. It sure would be nice if these guys would just tell the truth. |
On a "bright" side, "average", means that somebody does better...
