its a 15 speed, now someone else tell why its called a knuckle breaker.

rank 12-06-2007 01:36 AM

holy cow. nobody?

Part Time Dweller 12-06-2007 01:40 AM

A 15 has a U shift patten, meaning the "Big" hole is a forward movement of the stick. If you wrap your hand around the front of the shift handle, you tend to punch the dashboard, informing you the shift is complete.

All 15's are knuckle breakers then? you're kidding me. I haven't hit my knuckles once.

brian 12-06-2007 05:46 PM

not all of them, they were big in cabovers, especially KW cabovers.

I thought something seemed a little off about this. I pulled the 15 speed out of the lineup today and took it out for a pick up...top cog is back and to the right....same as 13's, 10's & 18's

:?:

I think he is right. I wasnt driving trucks then, but I remember the term. It was a Fuller tranny (now Eaton) and KW used them in K100s.

Depends on the model trans. RTO xxxx15 transmissions have the "U" shift pattern.

rank 12-07-2007 03:53 PM

ok. the 15 we have is an RTLO....basically a 10 with 5 gears of deep reduction. It's in an '85 T600. never had a K100......

thanks

If its a double overdrive its a "knuckle breaker", not ALL 15 speeds are double overs, some had only 1 overdrive.

Also a double over would be an RTOOxxx15

18 speeds are double overs, but have something that turns the last shift around so its in the "normal" position (rearwards and back)

There were 13 double overs also, but were/still kinda rare.
