An interesting tidbit...

...from fleetowner.com

Cummins also announced that beginning January 1, 2008, all its on-highway products will meet the new California Air Resource Board (CARB) idle-reduction regulation. Specifically, the Cummins ISX, ISM, ISL, ISC and ISB engines will be “Clean Idle” certified “generating NOx emissions of less than 30 grams per hour, so they “will be allowed to idle indefinitely” under the new rule.

allan5oh 11-24-2007 01:51 AM

Yeah I heard about that.

I don't think any APU's will be allowed to idle!

Red Clay Rambler 11-24-2007 11:09 AM

So the "idle police" have a way to measure grams-per-hour?

Is that called... "job security"?

allan5oh 11-24-2007 03:28 PM

The engine will have a CARB sticker on it.

Dispatch_This 11-24-2007 11:02 PM

This opens the door for after-market particulate filters. Wonder if it's possible to route your exhaust to a stand-alone filter when you need to idle in Calif.?

You've obviously never seen CARB working the scales. If you go through one when they're working and you have soot on your stacks, you might just find out how they do it

allan5oh 11-24-2007 11:18 PM

NOx is totally different from soot.

There's nothing you can really do about NOx.

no_worries 11-24-2007 11:29 PM

The soot on the stacks is just how they usually decide who to check out. Most of the techs equate a dirty stack with a dirty engine. And actually, it is a good indicator for malfunctioning emissions controls.

My APU is a Tier III which passes the emissions. Even if you have an older model they will phase them out over a period of 5 to 7 years. It's not like they will pass a law overnight and everyone with an APU has to throw them away.

allan5oh 11-26-2007 05:02 AM

your rigmaster has a DPF on it?

It needs to be tier 4a or something like that.

If you do the research Tier III is as good as it's going to get for APU's. This applies to all engines up to 175HP. If you have a Tier III APU then your good. All others will be phased out over a period of time just like the old trucks. They don't do this overnight.

allan5oh 11-26-2007 06:31 AM

You're correct, you don't have to worry for now. However any truck with a 2007 year engine needs a DPF equipped and tier 4 approved APU. I don't think there are any on the market right now.

No, that's not correct. Their are no Tier 4 and none planned for quit some time. All 2007 APU's are tier III and that's the state of the art. 175hp and less will remain tier III for some time.

Well, I'll be dipped. When I talked to Rigmaster they said they weren't doing it because the law is only applying to engines greater than 175 HP.

They went from Tier II to III to 4a in one year!!!

Steve it only matters in cali if you have a 2007 engine. If you don't it's irrelevant. I'm sure in the future it will matter, however there will probably be upgrade kits.

I'm sure when you bought the unit, rigmaster wasn't aware that cali was going to change the rules again.

I'll just stick one of my pandemic face masks over the muffler.
