sidman82 10-31-2007 01:51 PM

allan5oh 10-31-2007 01:53 PM

hehe, I only did 22,000 miles as well.

I'm such a lazy bastard.

Imagine how lazy I'm gonna be when my truck is paid off(dec 15th).

You are liable to bob tail around the block once or twice and come back and say you got 10.2 mph for the entire first half of next year. :P :P

rank 10-31-2007 02:16 PM

I know I asked this before allan but what are your specs, where, what do you pull and how fast do you pull it?

LMAO

99 Volvo 770
425 volvo engine
13 speed
3.73 rears
XDN2 24.5 lo pro drives(gotta change those)
XZA3 24.5 lo pro steers

I run 58-60 mph, pulling dry van. Usually average in the 20k-25k range. Mostly "middle canada" and midwestern USA.

Some "mods" to my truck include:
- Full through muffler
- Insulated exhaust manifold before turbo
- 105 psi in tires(religiously)
- Reduced trailer gap(now at 32" instead of 39")
- Full synthetic driveline fluids(petrocanada traxon in the diffs)

Other then that, just regular maintenance.

person 10-31-2007 04:51 PM

Do you pull your own van? If so have you considered the nosecone?
http://www.nosecone.com/

allan5oh 10-31-2007 04:54 PM

no, company vans.

Would be nice to have that, and the freight wing setup too.

person 10-31-2007 05:24 PM

http://www.airtab.com/ What about these for the tractor?

allan5oh 10-31-2007 05:33 PM

I already have some fairing gap reducers, might just put on more. I think you can double them up.

person 10-31-2007 05:46 PM

These are tabs that you stick on your cab extender farings - right along the edge. You can only put on so many. They have to be spaced according to their template.

Yeah,it sure does if I only pulled 25k and ran 60mph I could get 7mpg with my stupid Cat.

not cutting you down, you just have abnormal circumstances

allan5oh 11-01-2007 07:05 AM

Still, I know guys with classic trucks that can't even get 6 mpg running from Winnipeg to Minneapolis. Maybe a touch faster(62 mph), same weight.

I avg 6mpg pulling maxed out tankers, running 65-70 on the east coast, guess those acert engines aren't all bad.

allan5oh 11-01-2007 07:36 AM

Yeah those tankers must go through the wind pretty easy compared to our big boxes.

Yeah but 45k in a tanker feels like 100k in a box, they are defintely hard to get going and hard to stop.

allan5oh 11-01-2007 08:43 AM

That's true, especially those unbaffled ones.

Wouldn't want to ever drive one when it's slick out. Must be fun!

heavyhaulerss 11-01-2007 01:37 PM

i get 7 mpg doing 60 pulling 48.000 one way & deadhead back. in a cabover 11.1 det 350 horses.

ncnewbie 11-06-2007 10:51 AM

Allan,

What impact do you think just tractor aerodynamics have when pulling a tank? Also, don't remember where I got this link from, but here's some interesting reading about fuel mileage from Cummins>

http://www.everytime.cummins.com/eve...Whitepaper.pdf

allan5oh 11-06-2007 11:42 AM

A tank would have less resistance then a dry van, that I do know. How much? Well if I had a multi-million dollar wind tunnel I'd tell you!

What I do know is that for an aero truck pulling a dry van, one third of the aero resistance is due to the square ass end of the van.

Raafi 11-07-2007 04:39 AM

i hover around 5.0 running 70mph, with a 475 cat, 13-speed, 379 pete, and carry upwards of 35K thru all 48 states

7.9 would be gravy

shucks, 5.9 would be nice

geomon 11-07-2007 05:04 AM

Raafi...drop it to 62 mph for a month and see what your avg mpg is. The beauty is that you can always speed back up if you don't like running that slow. But check it out for a month...I'd be interested to see what your mileage improves to.

Raafi 11-07-2007 05:12 AM

geoman

believe me, you and my safety people would love for me to do that

and if i could, i would

but there is something in me that would die

do you want me to die?

geomon 11-07-2007 04:30 PM

Hey Raafi...

Take it as a challange for 1 month...yep just one measly month and then you can go back to that 70 mph you so love.

In fact make a bet to yourself that you can do it and the prize is to take the savings from the one month and buy some toy with it.

Now THAT puts it in a different light eh? Come on ....do it , I dare ya :)

Whats the deal on these Airtabs? Are they worth the $200 for my tractor? 1998 Volvo 770. This truck tends to rock in the wind, I hear they help. Any comments?

Thanks
Brad

Rock in the wind? When was the last time you changed all 10 shocks?

I saw a tractor with a van. Only the van had on the tabs along the back edge by the door. I want to know which gives better mpg. Putting them on the van or the truck extenders, if someone only put them on one.

allan5oh 11-12-2007 03:58 PM

I've seen wind tunnel testing concluding they did very little.

But many do claim being able to see better behind you in a rainstorm.

And less rocking in the wind, when trucks pass you, etc..

Fisherman 11-13-2007 04:09 AM

Suspension has been recently inspected, new shocks 6 months ago, new steers 5 mo, new drives 1 mo. I've owned it for 2 yrs. now and I get a great ride but I get some rocking in a cross wind. I'm going to have the cab shocks replaced and see if that helps.

Brad

allan5oh 11-13-2007 04:11 AM

That will definitely help.
