California strikes again!

It seems that they have exhausted all other forms of smog reduction so now they are going after us. Every truck base plated in CA must meet 2007 emissions by 2009,and they want every truck that travels in and out of CA to be able prove a LOW NOX reflash of the computer. I have been making calls to the various Govt. agencies involved and get the same response, that this is real and it is going to happen. Here is a link to an info page (aimed at dump trucks) but you get the idea.

Good thing I didn't buy that 95 Pete I was looking at, looks like it will be worhtless in CA by 2010.

Perhaps they would prefer to have their own trucks to meet at the border to carry their goods into the state.

tell me about it....I have a 1995 freightliner and my baby a 1988 pete... both are gonna be useless. I suppose I could put the upgrade on the freightliner but that cost $20000.00 but my pete is to be scrapped... I'll be out of business...

It doesn't really say that. Read it again.

For certain year vehicles(92-99) and certain makes. This is because certain makes "skirted" emissions rules and put out basically illegal engines. That's why there was such a huge lawsuit about 8 years ago. Instead of paying the EPA, the engine makers agreed to put that money(HUNDREDS of millions) into producing cleaner engines.

While that info isn't exactly correct, it's not too far off. For all intents and purposes, all trucks must meet 2007 emissions equivalents by 2013. The older the truck the sooner it must be in compliance. Of course this is just the proposal as it's currently written. It's to be submitted by the middle of next year, so we'll see what happens.

So whats going to become of older trucks going to Calif ??? I have a 86 Pete that I would not give up and have no desire to have or want to buy one of these newer problem-matic computer controlled trucks.

the way it was explained to me anything older than a '92 would have to be scrapped. So what all my friends with older trucks are saying is that they dont want to put any more money into them. even though they have always kept them well maintained. Why put money into a truck the government won't let you keep. Its a shame too cuz most of these trucks are really good, well maintained rigs (like mine). As usual leave it to the government to stick it to the little guy.

Your truck will have to be in compliance by Dec 2009

The EPA really needs to yank the CARB exemption from the Clean Air Act. This is getting ridiculous. California is trying to basically legislate in other states and that's overstepping it's bounds. The Federal Government needs to say enough is enough.

Once it happens in CA, it will blow like a dense, stinking, fog of death to the other states as well.
