GPS question
 

What kind of GPS system do you guys recomend. I have an end dump and I will start a new job around Dallas TX so I will need one in order to get to the many places they will send me.

they won't tell you where to go??? i would not take a GPS in an end dump because someone would probably steal it. just my opinion.


if they don't provide a CB or a phone number than the job is not worth having.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 and it's great. I think any GPS would be fine for you. The best thing is that it shows the streets and names in detail as you get closer so you can actually see like 3 streets ahead before you have to make the turn.

If you find someone selling a unit make sure it's not password protected and if it is, make sure they demonstrate that they have the correct password. Some units are stolen so the thief doesn't know the password and if you should hit the wrong button and put it into password protected mode, your screwed.

I dont see a GPS being a very good investment in a area such as Dallas. The GPS will not route you on truck friendly roads...GPS is mainly for cars. UNLESS they have came out with one that does truck routing :D , If so, then maybe it would help. We have GPS in the truck but I rarly use it. I just call for directions and then look it up on Microsoft streets and trips to get a visual of where we are going.

I highly recommend the use of GPS in city deliveries in any kind of a truck. Streets & Trips is awesome but you need a laptop & reciever. Costco has the Nuvi 250W on sale for $300. Very good investment.

I just bought Copilot Truck but haven't recieved it yet.

It is designed for trucks and will not (supposedly), route you down restricted roads or under low bridges. Of course I'll double check the routes. It has voice commands which can help you when you need to turn down a street that the sign is missing, or at night when you cannot see numbers. It will also tell you what side of the street the address is on.

It is laptop based and costs $300. I bought it because it helps with fuel tax reporting and has a large screen (my laptop).

Raymundo, don't listen to the naysayers, get yourself a GPS and save yourself some money and frustration. Walmart has one for a couple of hundred bucks and I was told it works fine. It is small enough to stick in your pocket. Bear in mind, the route it may give you is the shortest route (possibly goat trail), and is made for cars. You can, however, choose the route that is best for your truck.

It's a good system for the truck,not great though as it will not find majority of address that MS S&T does.good for routing.

Whats the difference between the 250w and 250 is it just the wide screen option? Is it preety good at giving basic truck routes?

Yeah.....only dif is the wide screen & it gives good direction to your distination but not sure if it has a truck route in it as I use a cheaper model.

I use the GPS version of Streets & Trips...$150 IIRC. I strap the laptop on the pass seat. It has a voice thingie but it should be louder.

Yes it' routing is for cars but I almost always re-map the route anyway. The route that it gives me is just a suggestion.
