Monthly Fuel Cost

Is it safe to say as an O/O that you can figure a $5900 fuel bill if you drive 10000 miles? I figure that on 2500 miles/week using 5 mpg @ 2.95/gallon for fuel. Are my figures correct?

usedup 09-27-2007 04:10 PM

Right on!.....

Chris M 09-27-2007 04:35 PM

 There just isn't any good way to make decent money in this game is there? I guess you could add back in FSC but how much or the 5900 does that come too?

CJSamples 09-27-2007 04:39 PM

Wow another Georgia trucker. Are you all set up to run? Truck , trailer , etc? I have to turn down some Georgia based loads every so often and it might be good to give them to someone on the site. I don't post enough to PM you so maybe we can exchange information.

Chris

Your gross income should be 15-20 k for the month is you're getting good rates and paid extra for tarping, etc. If you got .25 for FSC that's another $2500.

mikeymike 09-27-2007 05:13 PM

Hey CJ Douglas Co. Ga. based here and getting setup with authority. What kind of loads are you turning down and are they decent paying loads? Looking for reefer/van loads.

Chris M 09-27-2007 06:32 PM

I currently don't drive. I am trying to gather my facts before I try the O/O thing. Fuel is the big issue for me right now. I'm just not sure on low rates and 6k fuel bills per month how anyone makes money. It seems the trucking industry has put an earning cap on drivers. I don't think that's too fair for someone willing to work hard. Oh well.

The higher the fuel prices the BETTER we'll fare! Hoping fuel will be $3.50 to $3.75 per gallon by the time we join the ranks (6 to 12 months).

Diesel fuel will B $10 per gallon within 10 years! Single vehicle carriers and micro fleets (5 to 25 units) that don't team up/align themselves with others will fare worse than in todays environment!

PM me when you're ready for your authority/BOC-3, insurance, etc. and I'll do it for you for pennies-on-the-dollar (plus fed's fees of course)!

We're planning on running dedicated I-10 coast to coast (CA to FL, GA, SC, and NC).

THX all!

Chris M 09-27-2007 07:45 PM

I can't PM. Not enough posts apparently. I'm not really sure about how all of this works.

yep about $.40cpm for me

roadranger 09-27-2007 11:40 PM

if your getting only 5 MPG you won't last long - you need to get at least 6 to "break even" with the normal fuel surcharge. A decent tractor pulling a van should be 7+ .

rank 09-28-2007 02:48 AM

we're sitting at approx $.63/mile for fuel last time I checked. That's ~5.5mpg & $3.50/gallon. That will get worse in the winter. And then there's the idling....1 gallon per hour for 10 hours/day. This is 80,000lbs gross in eastern PA so it's kinda hilly.

Our trucks are older, but I've not seen a new truck that makes a difference yet. 1995 N14 410hp, 2001 C15 475hp, 1998 M11 370hp.

We just bought an '08 ISX 485 hp this week so we'll soon see about tis mileage thing.

When budgeting, I like to err on the side of caution. Use winter mileage of 5 mpg and add 10 gallons per day to idle if you don't have a bunk heater.

Chris M 09-28-2007 11:22 AM

No adevertising, just trying to get some real numbers. I too figured 5 mpg as a baseline. Better to have left over than to fall short. It's just when I was figuring it out 6k a month for fuel was a bit of a shock. I suppose if you haul light loads in a van you'd get some better mpg...I am looking at flatbed. The rates should be better to offset the heavier loads?? I'm not trying to sell anything, just looking for some good baseline numbers. Many thanks to those that replied with some useful info.

Thank God fuel prices are 'a choice!'

We chose $.16 CPM

Oil prices rose above $83 a barrel Friday as the weak dollar drove investors to the market and concerns remained about a decline in crude inventories at a key Oklahoma terminal.

What a joke.... Hope this guy knows plenty of drivers that are midgets to drive his little go kart trucks and run the ultimate dreamy loads. That don't really exist yet. Advertising on trailer - 5K - ya right. ZZZzzzzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Tell us more about getting Authority or where to get this information.
Do the Mexican truck drivers taking over our roads have to have all this?

Thanks

GMAN 10-03-2007 04:26 PM

I would count on buying about 120 gallons per day, on average. At $3/gallon, that comes to about $360/day for fuel. This figure could vary according to where you run, number of miles and mpg.

Gbtrucker, you can do a search on this forum or go to the fmcsa website. You can do everything on line yourself. You will basically need insurance, registered agents in all states in which you plan to run and pay them $300. Without a couple of years of driving experience, insurance is difficult to obtain.

Sorry Mike, all my freight is flatbed. But if I do get something I will certainly look you up.
