lift axle controls
 

Does anyone know what the regs are for lift axle controls? I've been told that the switch for raise/lower of the axle can be in the cab, but not the pressure adjustment. I've also been told that neither could be within reach of the driver's seat. This is only in certain states also. I know that here in AR, every dump truck I know of has the switch and the pressure regulator within easy reach of the driver.

Can anyone give advice. I'll need to be legal in all 48.

Around 1999 the regs were changed to require that the adjusting regulator must be outside the cab where the driver cannot access it while driving.

On dump trucks, the up - down switch is permitted to be in the cab obviously so the driver can lift the axle(s) when necessary while driving. The gauge can also be in the cab, or can be located at the regulators outside the cab.

On the dump trucks we set up at work, we put the regulators under the hood on the firewall.

The regs were changed apparently to prevent drivers from changing the pressure on their axles just prior to driving on to a scale for a DOT check.

Also, I believe that all controls for a lift axle on a spread axle trailer must be outside the cab

All the states are different, they make the laws NOT the feds.

Most states have laws that supercede the federal bridge laws.
