After telling me it would be a month to get the IFTA stickers, they came in one week.
I was just about as exited to see those stickers as a thirteen year old boy getting a Playboy magazine. :D

Adios Texas!

I landed in Houston yesterday and I posted my truck after no luck on the boards. I bet I got twenty calls in two hours offering $1 a mile. One of them had 8 stops for $1 a mile. Allen Lund was the company. What a joke.

I said no and no and then hell no a few times....

I finally got a call with a 1.80 rate, which was okay after what I'd been through, but it is taking me to Tampa, and I'll probably have to drive out of there I've been told??

What are you hauling to Tampa?

slacker 12-02-2007 08:40 AM

Load it, I'm hauling 5,000# of ductwork. It worked out to be 1000 miles for $1900. About $1400 after fuel, and it delivers late Tuesday.

My truck should get between 8-8.5 on this load, and provided I can get out of there with a load, it will be a good run for me.

I've been stuck in Houston all weekend and I should have planned better. I'll never unload in Houston on a Friday again. You've got to be loaded and gone by early afternoon Friday, or you're gonna get to know the truckstop people on a first name basis.

I'm looking at car haulers right now, and if all goes well, I'm going to buy one after the first of the year. The reasons are as follows.

1. I'm tired of sitting around
2. I'm tired of not being able to work on weekends
3. I'm tired of low rates
4. I'm tired of slow paying brokers
5. I'm tired of factor fees because of number 4.
6. I like to work hard and be rewarded for it.
7. I like a challenge
8. I've worked with cars for 30 years and it seems a good match.
9. I'm too stupid to realize what I'm getting myself into. :D
10. I can work close to home and make a lot more than this van freight.

Am I on the right track or derailed?

If you do auctions you will sit plenty.

They'll still be there

see #4

There is good money in it and not everyone can do it.

If you can load the wagon w/o using brokers then go for it, if not I wouldnt buy the car hauler, and your claims will definitely start to occur just because stuff happens and also because people file frivolous claims. IMO your are getting on the wrong track. Is your van vented? Those Texas onions will start moving in Jan/Feb will you be hauling them direct and not through a broker? HHMMMM, something to consider instead of buying a rig you can only haul one product on.....cars.

Since you posted your numbers last, have they gotten better?
