DRIVER FORCED UNLOADS FROM A BROKERED LOAD?
Ok....nothing in the bill about this load I just did being a driver unload, and the broker said he didnt know?......is this a common occurance I have to look forward to as a new own authority carrier?
I just took it for granted he would specify this ahead of time in our agreement....hmmm was I being naive again? |
If it doesn't say anything about driver assist on the confirmation order or bill of lading, then I would not help unload. That is another service which someone needs to pay the truck.

Yeah...I quess my problem had kind of a happy ending. I called the broker n raised hell about him being possibly decietfull in his business dealings? Such questions as do you always treat your new carriers this way?....n how many of them are happy with this kind of treatement, n look....'I dont cheat you....I promiosie to p/u on time (do) try my best to deliver on time (did) do you want a carrier like that or not, and he agreed to pay me $45 an hour for the unload so at least....so I am promised compensation at least.
He seemed to make good on his offer as I did recieve a new rate confirmation plus $90 (e-mail), but I find it hard to believe,(maybe dis-ingenouse) that he didnt know this was a driver unload? |
One more thing to always ask about...before.

Had that happen a few times. Get there and the first question is "are you unloading or do you want a lumper" , "Neither, i drove it here". Had a 5 am appt at on place, got backed in and then they asked, told them i wasnt doing it and dont have any cash, sat in their door with them screaming at me until 8am when the broker got in.
Another good one is you pay them with a Comp or t-check and we will reimburse you. Comp or t check ends up costing ypu $$ to use and you have to claim it as income when you get reimbursed. I usually tell the broker that they can issue the check to the lumper, i dont have anything to do with it, i drove it here and it doesnt say anything on my rate confirmation about a lumper. |
I delivered 5 pallets to a food place up in MA. When I got there I had to wait 3 hours until it was my turn then I got in a door and the kid asks with an attitude if I am unloading it. I said sure I will. Then he asked if I had a operators cert. for the forklift. Of course I didnt I drive the truck. So he says it will be 50$ then and go wait in the truck. In my opinion they should at least give you a manuel pallet jack and not force you to pay them. I hate when I get to these places on time or earlier than appointment then I need to wait hours for them to get me a door. But if I am 30 mins late its a big deal.

ALWAYS ask before you commit to the load. Verbal agreements mean nothing.

Take it off or refuse it or pay for inside delivery are the options I've give my consignees. As an LTL driver my responsibility ends at the end of the trailer. |
If there is nothing on the confirmation about driver assist or unload, then it should be extra. If the broker will not confirm, tell him you're going back to your yard and will not return with the frieght until you have money in the bank. And when you do return, he will have to pay for the extra miles. It works.
