IRP rates????????
 

Does anybody know how different IRP jurisdictions calculate their rates?
I'm ammending my plates to add a few areas and I cannot get a straight answer on price.

First, my mileage in these states will likely be ZERO, but I cannot estimate ZERO....apparently the jurisdiction estimates on your behalf.

Second, I thought it was based on mileage but apparently it's not as simple as that (according to my permit service).

I think they make it up as they go 8) ,I added a few states when I changed companies and they just estimate the milage and give you a figure I asked her how they came up with that number and she just shrugged.Must be some program that the IRP has?

I was told that it is more about the actual mileage after the first year.I wonder if it would just be better to get all 48 even if I never plan to go out west,would it cost me more if I never run any milage there?

The estimates really add up when you buy them all. $175 for Quebec alone.

The estimated miles are based on the number of miles run, on average, run by trucks based in your state.

I didn't want to start another thread but I have 26 states on my base plate and I know I am limiting myself.At times I would like to go in certain states that are not permanently on my plate.Someone said I can call my local IRP etc.. and put that state or states on there for that day for a small fee.Is this true?

Yes.

I think the temporary permits are valid for 72 hours....so you need to guess when you will be goiing through that state. Depending on the state, it may be more expensive for the tempoary permit than ammending your plates.

For example, in my case, adding DE was ~$1.50 estimated + $25 flat fee for ammending the plate and my permit service was charging more than that for the temporary permit. The flat fee is $25 regardless of how many states you add so I added all the cheap states. IIRC, I added 8 states for $6. On the other hand, Quebec was $176.

Caveat Emptor because as I have found out, IRP is a quagmire of calculations and BS. You won't really know until you get the bill.

Oh one more thing Henboy. The downside to ammending the plate (instead of getting a permit) is that it seems it can't be done as quickly as a permit. Permits can be done in a few hours, ammendments are more like days or weeks so you need to plan ahead a bit more.

Also, permits can be faxed but you need to pickup the cab card in person at an IFTA office...also a PITA.

OK that was two more things.

Most states will mail your new cab card to you. However, if you want to go to your state offices they can usually add additional states while you wait. It is usually about as cheap to have all 48 states put on your cab card in the beginning rather than adding later.

Michigan has a Fax system, that when you get on it (the fax system) they can fax you a temp. within a few minutes if you have to head out right away and then you get your new cab card in a few days.
