Can I get a guesstimate?
 

I am trying to figure how to get a piece of equipment I am looking at buying from Texas to California. Because I am a local guy that drives in little circles all day I figured I would ask the highway guys and gals. It is basically a steel box 15'L x 7'w, weighs 2200lbs and will need to be on a flat or step deck. Mileage works out to be 1,440. How would I figure a ball park amount it would cost me to get this thing here,am I looking at mileage only? Or is there a fuel surcharge or a I hate going to Cali fee? Just trying to figure if trucking will kill the deal. Thanks.

I usually charge a minimum of $1/mile for any LTL. You may be able to get someone to take it for around $0.80/mile. I am assuming that you don't want to pay truckload rates, only LTL. If you need it in a hurry, you could pay the truckload rate.

You could list it on uship.com you set the basic price range you would like to pay and people will bid on the price to haul it.

Thanks GMAN, I was figuring $1.50 a mile and have no problem paying the going rate and am in no hurry. A guy at the yard said I should look for a "Hot shot" company that moves cars and lighter stuff and it will be a full load for them and easy to unload when it gets here. I had a buddy who ended up having a tractor delivered to a "drop point" in Fontana CA and they held it hostage for $300, just trying to avoid that.

There are thousand's of these type of shipments everyday on www.uship.com check them out if nothing more than to get an idea what price you should pay.You can search from a certain state to another state makes it pretty easy.

You can check with different brokers, for a rate to move your box. Landstar and Mercer Transportation have their Texas and CA broker/agents listed on their website. DallasMavis does as well. Thing to remember about brokers..they are gonna make their $$$ off the movement.

You can post your "box" at both InternetTruckstop; http://www.truckstop.com/

and Getloaded; http://www.getloaded.com/.

Post it as flatbed LTL (less than truckload) and post the estimated weight as well as the dimensions, the city where the "box" will be loaded, the city where you will take delivery, the miles bewtween the 2 points, and the rate YOU are wanting to pay.

There are many flatbed's and stepdecks out there, as well as a few RGN's, that will throw your box on for the extra revenue, if they have the space and the weight available. Many flatbed and stepdeck operators are out there, hauling only LTL shipments and making good money doing it.

If you want that box in a hurry, expect to pay Truckload rate ($1.80 per mile or more + fsc of 25-26%). If you are willing to let the truck make it's money hauling ltl, you should be able to receive it within 2 weeks of shipment, and pay a rate in the area of $1300, with fsc included.

It's entirely possible you can find someone with a load of pipe, that weighs less than 43,000 pounds, who will through the item on top, if it isn't going to put the load over 14 foot in height. Lot's of operator's look for some gravy to put on their meat & potatoes.
