Crete or Barr Nunn for O/O
 

hi guys,

I`m very new to this forum and to trucking business in general.I worked for FedEx Ground for a 4 years and for the last year for another company where I had a dedicated run from Nashville to Atlanta and back every nite wich was canceled few days ago.I`m stuck with a payment on my `03 Pete 387 and was thinking about changing the companies.So far I see that Crete and Barr Nunn are rated prety high here.So, I would like to hear from some of you and what do you think wich company would be a better choice for O/O.Every advice is very appreciated.Thank you for your time.

Welcome Jeff. This could be interesting so I'm going to read along with you. Generally, the advice given on this forum is to look for a percentage job, don't work for cents per mile. I'm on percentage myself but it's self dispatch. I spend a ton of time searching for loads and so far I don't think I'm doing much better than cents per mile O/O's who have their loads given to them and are paid deadhead miles.

I do have complete freedom over how much I work. I get to look for freight going where I want to go though I usually end up going with whatever is paying a decent rate. I can shy away from heavy loads and I can't forget that when I'm a little weary of searching for loads.

Crete, Barr Nunn. If you care to contribute Jeff, can you break them down for us according to practical v. shortest miles, rate per mile, fsc, deadhead pay, any options for choosing amongst loads, hometime...extras like convenient, comfortable terminals or shops or neat hats :lol: (I will say, Landstar has the best hats)

Perhaps someone will jump on the thread who has experience with one or the other

As a O/O I would not go with Crete my self. Unless your doing a very short haul, you'll be getting less than a dollar a mile. I had not look much at the other O/O package well to answer.

I would look at companies like Land Star and Crest that acts like an agent and you choice your own loads, the directions or lanes you want to run.

Wrong. You forgot to add FSC.

I don't think it is wise to count on FSC to make a cpm look good,in the same way that you cannot make you per mile rate look good by not including all deadhead miles.

If I were given a choice I would probably go with Crete. I have known of some who work for them and seem to be happy. However, I would probably not go with either of them. I prefer carriers who pay percentage. I think you will do better with them.

Even with th4e FSC they are still to low for me.

ya know gman alot of members love to harp on that, yet they hardly ever mention companies that do pay %.

I believe mercer does, but who has a bigger freightbase, crete or mercer??

When picking a co. you have to look at the big picture.

Percentage don't mean crap if you deadhead for free 1200+ miles per month. Does anyone think of that one :?:

I strongly recommend that you talk to Dart, I have a couple of friends leased there and they are very happy, one nice thing about them is they direct deposit your pay after every load
