How many miles per day do you drive

I'm talking about all miles, dead and loaded.

Dejanh 04-20-2007 02:15 AM

As a company driver i ran 1000 on a average, did 120,000 in seven months before i went on my own. Now, if a load pays well am gonna do it again and again. last month only thing that payed well were team operations and thats what i did..

1000 miles a day? That doesn't seem right (or physically and legally possible).

I try to run as few as I can. 200 - 300 is about my maximum.

Doghouse 04-20-2007 02:59 AM

I can't remember how many I drove with Stevens, but I think it was aound 500 per day. Sometines 600 if I was out on 40.

Never said it was legally possible, physically very much so.....

300 miles at the rate youre getting is plenty, hence the new Pete 8)

Right there with ya 8) My truck ran 10 (ten) miles today, and has been doing that all week actually, lol

When I ran OTR I would do 300-600 a day depending on what states I was running in.

coastie 04-20-2007 03:29 AM

When I was driving, it pending who I was driving for. One company I average about 300 miles aday, others anywhere from 600 to 1000. Not saying I ran them all legal though.

brian 04-20-2007 05:12 AM

600-800, legal hours wise but usually overweight with drill pipe.

04-20-2007 05:46 AM

I've done as little as 350 and as much as 700 depending on where I am. In New England I'm at the lower end. I would say 500 is an average for me. When I quote how long a load is going to take I use 500

Dmitri_Lithuania 04-20-2007 10:15 AM

Yes for sure, I driveing maybe 700 mile. Then am to sleepin for Darak will be driveing 700 mile. Sunday is not driving till 10:30 at the night. Look for us in the stops for trucks with all sport bags piled upon windshield and line for washing tied to your trailer.
Puddles of pish next to our door and half eaten goat wrapped in paper silver.
Happy truckings

LOL....Ya, right....And, throw me down the stairs my shoes.

serbie 04-20-2007 01:58 PM

Hard to say, running around NE i avg 425 a day. Been able to bang out 575+ quite a few times, hard in this area to do, unless from PA to MA using the pike.

Average, I'd say about 5-600, per work day, but "average", didn't mean much, in this context!

773 miles / 65mph = 11.892307692307692307692307692308 hours.
(above figure is no joke, this is what the calculator spit out on my laptop  )

773 miles / 11 LEGAL HOURS = 70.27272727272727272727 AVG MPH
(again, laptop calculator)

Would say what, 11.75 hours or so.................

If you drove 11.75 hours, you violated the 11 hour rule

If you claim to have averaged 70.27 mph, you falsified your logs.

The laws of gravity, the laws of physics, and common sense state that you will not average 70 mph over an 11 hour period, when you are driving in a state with a 75 mph speed limit. There's things like MOUNTAINS, TRAFFIC, SCALES, and FUELING that will slow you down well below 70 mph, thereby rendering your "average" impossible.

At best, you'll get a 67 mph average, and even that would be darn hard to pull off.

Rev, how about this. Drive Hours starting around modnight, till 11 Am. Take 10 hours off, which would be till 9 PM. Drive till next 11 hours. Minus the other small task that has to be logged? This way he or who ever could drive more than 11 hours in one day, therefore it would be legal to do 770 miles maybe a few more.

What you fail to take into account is that you'd be out of hours in less than 5 days, and have to take a 34 hour reset. Therefore, when calculating out your average miles over a weeks time, you wouldn't be anywhere near that 770 miles.

770 X 5 = 3850 miles / 7 days = More like an average of 550 miles per day average over a 7 day period. And that isn't taking into account any pre trips, post trips, fueling, loading, unloading, etc. that eats up your 70 hour clock.

It just isn't possible, and it just isn't realistic.

serbie 04-20-2007 03:55 PM

Could be reading your response wrong(sure I am), but just want to clear up that I wasn't the one claiming to avg 70+mph....

You're reading it wrong. I'm just saying that it isn't realistic. I'm not pointing fingers.

rank 04-20-2007 04:17 PM

We normally leave at 06:00 and return about 10:00 the following day if we don't get a backhaul. One round trip is 750-950 miles and we'll do this 3 times per week coming home empty. ~2600 miles/week.....home 4 nights....Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat.

With a backhaul, the round trips are ~1100 miles but sometimes we stay out another night. 2 trips/week for 2200 miles.

Yes I agree it'll eat up the clock faster. Not saying it will not, but it can be done one day time that way. Not saying He is but it would be foolish to do that in the long run picture. Yes it would not be realistic to do it all the time. Impossable. not to mention getting burnt out fast.

The reason I am nitpicking over this is that the O.P. specifically asked:

Quote:

How many miles per day do you drive
Not how many miles have you managed to do once in a blue moon by running your butt off.

These people coming in here claiming to do 700-1000 miles per day are giving an unrealistic picture of the day to day driving they do.

Doghouse 04-20-2007 06:15 PM

I did the math over and over again, and I keep coming up with an average of around 350 to 500 miles per day.
350 (or less) on busy traffic areas, and 500 on an open highway.
I probably won't be able to do 70mph let alone 75mph in a DD 60 365hp with 410 rears. I don't even know if the truck will go that fast out in the open. Thats why I was wondering how you guys did, so I don't seem like a slow poke :D , even though I usually am!!

What it all comes down to is - do what you feel comforable with. If you're tired, stop. No load is worth your life.

Those who run 700-1000 miles per day are an accident waiting to happen.

Mackman 04-20-2007 09:04 PM

I drive 115-120 miles in a 10hr day. LOL i love it. 55 mins to load and 25 mins to un load and make 3 loads a day. 45 mins each way give or take a few. I get 1.75 a mile as a company driver if i did 120 every day. or 19.10 an hr which is what i really get paid.

BigDiesel 04-20-2007 09:44 PM

I run between 500 to 600 per day. But I do not go into the Northeast.

tdriver1959 04-20-2007 10:27 PM

I run around 350-550 miles a day and average about 2000 to 2200 miles in 5 days

Doghouse 04-21-2007 12:52 AM

I drove like that with Stevens, and the dispatcher hated it when I would stop. I am so glad to be done with that garbage.

Paul McGraw 04-21-2007 01:21 AM

My miles per day varies a lot depending on part of country, did I load or unload during part of the day, and lots of other factors.

Generally, if it I am on a longer run and have no loading, unloading, or any other delays, I can do 620 to 650 miles and be totally legal. If I try to do more than that I find myself having to fudge the numbers.

In a 6 day work week which includes some loading and unloading, etc. I will average perhaps 2400 miles so that is 400 miles per day.

I was talking to a Georgia DOT officer at a scale the other day, who told me they consider 700 miles per day to be evidence of log violation and if they see a 700 mile day they start double checking everything on the log, asking for fuel receipts, double checking on miles and speed between cities and so forth until they can prove the violations and ticket them. This guy claimed they assume an honest average is about 50 mph in most conditions.

It would be less than that on days that you have to fuel. On those days you are probably looking at 13.25 hours driving.

Ian Williams 04-21-2007 07:53 AM

Anywhere from 0 to 284.

On the low end I may not be needed in the city that day and I just play freight tetris on my tow motor for 8hrs.

If I do City P&D I'll drive anywhere from 10mi for a peddle near the barn up to 150 if I go out to our customers in Gardnerville or Fernley.

On the high end if we have more freight that line drivers I'll end up using my 2hr extension, doing a turn n' burn to Sacramento and back for a whopping 284.

04-21-2007 12:46 PM

The day I ran 700 miles to get home took me close to 15 hours. I didn't plan too well that day and the last 200 miles is pretty congested with no place to park for the night.

Today I've gone 300 miles so far with the cruise on 67 and my GPS tells me my moving average is 60. There are hills that bring me down to 57 or so.

tootie04 04-21-2007 02:07 PM

When we were with Arrow in our lease truck Hubby drove 500-800 a day. Now in our own truck he only drives 300-500 a day and makes MORE money

tootie

04-21-2007 06:13 PM

Come on Tootie, you know the truth. If he was alone in the truck now he would be doing like 1,900 a day.

Oh look honey, a craft store, pull over.

I have to pee, pull over.

Lets fool around, pull over, oh wait, never mind I have to pee.

Look, CVS, stop I need some things.

Oh look, soy burgers, I'll bet your hungry dear.

sidman82 04-21-2007 11:24 PM

I do around 75 to 160 a day. (Running local LTL dedicated)

BanditsCousin 04-22-2007 08:34 PM

Anywhere from 0-700, and somedays I'm on duty for many, many hours 0 miles or not.
