Days to pay..?

How long do you guys usually wait to get checks rolling in from the brokers that you have done the work for?

GMAN 02-09-2007 05:33 PM

It depends on the broker. I have a couple who pay me when they get the bills. One in particular, will sit down and write a check if I take the bills to his office and wait. If I send the bills in the mail, he will write a check and it will go out that same day or the next. I have another who will FedEx a check the same or next day to me if I pay the FedEx charges. There are some who typically pay 30-60 days. If a broker doesn't stick with his pre agreed payment time with me, that is the last time I do business with him. I don't have time to chase my money down. One other thing, if he breaches his payment agreement with me, I feel comfortable going to his customer and trying to make them MY customer. Any agreement you sign where you will not go back to a shipper whom you have been sent by a broker is void if they breach their part of the contract. Failure to pay as agreed is a breach of contract. If I agree to not back solicit a shipper and the broker keeps their part of the agreement (pay me as agreed) then I will honor my agreement with them. Otherwise, the shipper is fair game. If you are having a problem with a broker paying you, it is can help motivate them if they think you plan on contacting their customer for payment or more business.

If you're in the dump truck business it could be 365 or more........

Listed by fastest to slowest.

-ATS/Sureway (FL). Fax your POD before Thursday at noon and it's processed the next week. They claim that they pay within 15 days if recieving paperwork within 10 days, IIRC.
-Dynasty (Louisiana).
-Allen Lund (21 days after rec't of faxed POD, but must have a mailed copy before issuing check).
-Landstar (POD's must be mailed in..will not accept faxes and this really slows things down for us aliens).

All in all, I find it takes about 30 days to get my money, but I always call to confirn that they recieved the invoice. Not bad considering I'm in Canada. It can take longer. I actually had a broker from ATS call me and ask me to hurry up and invoice them so she could get paid. Apparently she doen't get her money until I do.

When did LS stop accepting faxed Invoices and POD?? Hauled a good many loads for them and after the first half dozen, we were getting paid in 12 days.

GMAN 02-11-2007 02:08 PM

CH Robinson will accept faxed bills, Landstar will accept Transflow bills and pays in 2 days with a 1 1/2% discount. Most of the larger brokers will pay within 1-7 days if you discount the bills. The discount rate ranges from about 1 1/2% to about 7%.

I am in the dump truck business and seldom wait longer than 15 days. Many of my customers cut me a check on the spot and if they are new to me, they prepay. Anything over 15 days gets late fees outlined in my contract with a customer.

Kranky 02-11-2007 10:57 PM

The key word is Could.

I have had customers that pay the following week, and at the other end of the spectrum I have had customers who finally after threats of legal action, paid up about a year later. (and when I reconciled their payment against the hours worked, it often came up short).

We always provided quality, on time, conscientious service, but we got screwed just as bad as the fly by night outlaw dump truckers.

It must be different in your area, because around here, that wouldn't be worth the ink used to print it.

So glad I'm not part of that charade any longer.
