once you get involved in a broken down truck that won t start
you are stuck for the duration
I spent 3 hours trying to help a driver who broke down in his driveway in the frozen wasteland of Duanesburg,NY and it never really gave a hint of wanting to start
If a truck is" frozen through " because it sat all weekend and the batteries are dead
You are going to volunteer a lot of time to get it going
I told the guy I would charge it for 1 whole hour more and if it did not start I was going home
......I went home..
Last night the guy who parks next to me shows up and could not start his Volvo.(I start my truck twice a day on weekends) He asked me for a jump and I told him I had guests at my house (an outright lie)
I went home and watched the Superbowl
It seems the ISX Cummins is one tough motor to start if you have weak batteries
My Detroit may not start but it will smoke like crazy giving you some hope for the next series of cranks.


So,
If a guy s battery goes dead while he is driving
and he is on the shoulder
Do not bother giving him a jump
Thats not the problem
All weekend frozen solid?
You will be there forever.

never use your truck to pull start someone
trust me something always breaks
you have to pull start plenty of vehicles to be good at it
you have to put the chain on the spring shackle and hook the entire link with the hook
....not the tip of the hook
(you can still break something here)
NOT ON THE CROSS MEMBER!!
OR THE ICC BUMPER!!
If the other truck has a ring on the front... use it
otherwise the spring shackle(and you can screw it up)
bend the bumper etc
The driver of the dead truck has to know what he's doing
The key has to be "on"

and use a high gear at least 5th gear
and how to work the clutch
so many idiots insist on trying to jump in low gear and you will snap the chain or just be dragged around ripping the tires up
make a plan of where you will be towing and what happens if it does not start (where will you go)
Then something always winds up bent.
Even if you lend someone a chain and someone else pulls starts
You are stuck until they get started

Once you've gelled up it's such a fun job getting your fuel flowing again-Carry a few extra fuel filters

My truck is in my driveway plugged in because I don't have electric where I park. I don't care what the neighbors think :shock: It's not worth the aggravation of a frozen truck in the morning. :roll:

fire under the tanks gets the fuel flowing.

Simple maintenance will prevent any and all of this. The only exception is if you get an assload of water in your fuel.

Fire under a Detroit oil pan will melt it

That's if you don't have any oil leaks :P

Spent Many cold snowy days with a cheap $ 5.00 BBQ grill and a bag of charcoal and wood under the oil pan of frozen trucks.....Glad I live In Louisiana now

When the batteries are dead enough the computer will not operate, you can pull the truck from NJ to Nebraska and it won't start.

Ha ha a Detroit with out an oil leak, that's a good one yoopr. :lol:
