Dump business ???
To hire on to hall asphalt Most of the companies here want me to sign their company on my insurance as a co insured, is this common everywhere in this business? This makes me pay for their insurance& cuts my coverage in half. When I was in the plumbing business & somone required this they could not make you do it. would the dump truck owners let me know if this is common where they work?
Thanks, marktruck |
Almost daily, I keep seeing these threads asking for info about dump trucking.
I am going to cut & paste my "stock reply" and use it where applicable. I just got out of the dump truck business after 19 years, and went to work for a union excavating co. Perhaps that would give you a clue. |
That is not common around my parts, not that I know of. Every customer wants a copy of my accord notice but thats it.

It started as a side line to my plumbing business, but after haveing a stroke last year that left me unable to do plumbing anymore MY dump truck is the only piece of equipment that I can use since I have only10% use of my left arm.Its all Paid for I & don't want to go on disability if I can still work at something.I have to pay My bills,I don't think any union company will hire Me in MY shape. i was looking into this asphalt thing cause its easier on the truck than hauling dirt for buiders. Did anyone ever approach with the co insured deal ? marktruck |

DUMP BUISINESS
Ah.... Sacramento, so that's where all of our Arizona transfers keep going
??? Transfers are becoming extinct, being replaced with super 16's, 18's. I'm in the process of selling my super 10, to get a used transfer, and go back to Fresno,Ca.... where I have connections, with landscape hauling. Buying a tri-axle, was the biggest mistake.......... Former Soldier 8) |
Dump Buisiness
If your new, & thinking about it TRUST ME......
DON'T!!!!!! Not unless, you can at least get 40 or more hrs! |
Yeah you can't go one mile out here without seeing a transfer truck running down the road. =)

DUMP BUISINESS
Really? is it that bad now????
In Az, it's like that with super 16's, & 18's, EVERYBODY has one!!!! It's crazy, every where you go, there's like 10 of those trucks, if you can fit 4 drop axles under the truck, your'e good to go! The 16's can carry 21-22 tons, & the 16's can carry up to 25.5 tons! ON A STRAIGHT TRUCK! NO TRAILER!!!!!! The only thing good, is that Az doesn't have that dumb-ass bit program, that basically steals money, for CHP..... |
In PA we can gross 73,280 on a tri axle my old man can haul around 23 tons. In New Jersey you can haul 80,000lbs on a tri axle the way you guys do things out west is kinda crazy. just my 2 cents.

Mackman, as much as it pains me to say this. Those west coast dumps ain't so crazy if you think about it. More weight over more axles. Easier on the roads and alot easier to stop. I am sure you have noticed the difference between your dad's tri when it is loaded even to 73280 and your TT loaded to 80 stopping. That tri takes alot more room.
What I do like about "east coast" dump trucks is that we don't have nearly the tire bill those super 18's do. Now of course getting those super 18's and transfers into a job site has gotta be interesting. This summer I saw a super 18 from Va come up our way and he hauled one load of the hot rock and was put off the job because he was just too long. |
DUMP TRUCKS
Yeah, you try hauling over 70,000 on a tri-axle, in Az, AND GET CAUGHT?
You've had it!!!! a dollar, for every pound over the legal limit, & God knows, what other fines you'll get!!! Besides, that sounds really hard on the truck, suspension, etc...... The super 18's are too big on some jobs, the strong arm is a reall pain in the ass!!!! For my tri-axle KW T800, 62,000 limit......... The only cool thing about Ca, is that their bridge laws, don't allow super 14's 16's 18's, thank God, can you imagine how many supers there would be???? |
I have never seen a strong arm in action. Kinda looks like a pain in the rear. Always wondered how it worked in a paver or when getting loaded and how it affects the truck going down the road.

Lieghtweight tri in Nc = 18tons, Quad = 21-22 tons, Quint = 24-25 tons, Truck with Quad trailer = 24-26 tons.

Are they asking to be addionally insured? If so it's common practice. In CA we have been overtaken by "super 10's" just a 3 axle dump with a 4th drop axle added, bed lenths range from 15 to 18 feet. The CHP is trying to reign them in a bit down here but they are everywhere. The srong arms are doing well, they are an oversized 3 axle dump with a booster axle like a cement mixer, they really only haul hot asphalt. But for hauling material a transfer just can't be beat! I was told that AZ did have a BIT program of sorts,I don't think the CHP is profiting off of the BIT though, they are horribly under staffed,I just had an "administrative review" he looked at my drug program and that was it.
