I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Freightliner. It's a 2000 with a 9spd and a small Cummins engine. Reliable as heck so far and 710k on the clock. picked it up (without the boxes) for 24k here in Sacramento. I can't say a sinlge bad thing about my truck, when I purchased it I opted out on an inspection and warranty because I felt comfortable with the truck as is after taking my test drive. It gets 6mpg as an average for me running local w/ the trailer if your wondering about fuel milage.
As far as the truck you are looking at, it is an older truck but the milage isn't bad at all - wouldn't hurt to take it for a drive yourself and see how she does, and if you are unsure of your judgment you can always get an inspection/dyno/warranty to cover your butt. BOL :) |
What are you going to be hauling?

Well then that motor will probably be alright but Detroit really suck for dump trucks.

We have one just like that - the 470 Detroit is a real strong puller! Both that truck and that engine are easy to work on and parts are reasonable. The cab has lots of space - more than most daycabs.

Thats a clean looking truck for being 10 years old.
I also have wondered about local work availability. I work in food service delivery now but there isn't an option for an owner op. in that field. I wouldn't mind having a day cab and driving local (in my state and maybe the surrounding states) pulling a dry van (or flat) but have no information on whats potentially out there. |
There is some local daycab work up here in the NorthEast but you really have to know people or lease on to a container company or air freight outfit. Forward Air seems to be always looking for O/Os and most of that is doable with a daycab. Cardinal Logistics is another one that can use daycabs. Only issue I've heard about with containers is that since most of the O/Os have sleepers you will get sent into the places they can't get into - tight alleys and docks designed for a 10 foot straight job  . By the way, one of our recently retired fill-in drivers is selling an FLD120 Detroit 430hp daycab cheap in excellent shape for under $15k up in Webster MA.
