What type of engine oil?

Just curious as to what type of engine oil you use and if there is a reason why you use the brand you do.

Also, have you had any bad experiences with any name brand oil and if so what was it.

I have a 1985 FTL with a 350 BCC engine, and prior to getting the oil changed at the dealership I was using Delo. At the FTL dealership they put in Delvac.

Rotella and only Rotella

Papa Rick 12-28-2006 12:23 AM

Any reason why Rotella and only Rotella?

Any oil that has the same ratiungs as Rotella is just as good. I think the ratings are cl or ch I can't remember. I ran Sunoco super c until they stopped selling it around here now I run Esso. I have run Rotella when I've had to but my truck uses oil when I do and doesn't when I use Esso. Go figure. Any truck shop can tell what the proper rating to use is.

I had bad luck with the Rotella, nothing went wrong, just would use a lot, like a gallon every 2000 miles, and this was when the truck was brand new.

I changed over to Delo and now use a gallon every 9000 miles.

Don't know why my 3406E Cat doesn't like the Rottella but it don't.

Either Rotella, Delo, or Delvac all are good oils.

That's weird, when me and my old man switched to rotella from mobil, our oil consumption and oil leakage(rear main seal) both went down.

yoopr 12-28-2006 04:55 AM

That's odd about your Cat engine doing that.
Rotella always seemed to not break down but that's all I've ever used.

Oil doesn't break down. Additives do.

I use Delo in my truck, as that is what the engine manufacturer recommends.

Explain this one, 2005 Pete 379, with a c15 Cat engine, sticker on drivers side frame rail says "Factory filled with Chevron Delo"

Why? Cat has their own oil, and I have heard from tons of Cat people that it comes in the same shipment as thier Mobil oil.

Is that a Peterbilt "factory fill?"

BTW, I personally use Castrol's Tection oil, but thats my own truck, My dad treats the others to Delvac.

Yes - Peterbilt factory fills with Delo.

Cat has their own oil

Cat has it's own everything even down to the Bolts.

thejunkman 12-29-2006 02:39 PM

LOL yep Cat even has Boots and eyeglasses now too.

Thanks REv. I figured it was a Peterbilt alliance.

Cat and Mobil oil are the same.

no_worries 01-03-2007 10:39 PM

My KW with a Cummins came factory filled with Delo as well, yet the only engine oil that Cummins specifically recommends is Valvoline Premium Blue...and that's for extended drain intervals even.
