I am buying a used truck that has recaps on the drives. My question is are these tires safe to run. I have heard stories of caps getting hot and the treads separating or just having heavy loads and them doing the same thing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also if I decide to get new drives what brand would you recommend. The truck has 295/75 22.5 on it now. If it makes any difference it's a 2004 Volvo 670.

By saying recaps do you mean tyres that have been remoulded? That is illegal on trucks in U.K and I,m surprised if its legal over there. Tyres like that will explode. Do not use them!

My dad all ways run recaps never had a problem. Back in the day i think recaps where junk that's what i hear anyway. I think recaps have came a long way. But he is in a dump truck. As long as you don't have any fancy fenders on the truck i would say you would be all right. If you do have fancy fenders on the truck i say take them off cuz if the tire does blow the fender will come with it.

I don't like re-caps. And I dis-like it more when I'm running down the highway and I have to dodge the strips of rubber on the road from some one's re-cap that has peeled off. My company used to buy them, got them convinced to pay a little more and buy 'good' tires. I really think that it depends a lot on what and how much weight you are hauling as to what tires to buy. And yes, if they blow, they will take the fenders with them.

I have experimented with them on one trailer. I had two and both wound up blowing and doing some damage to the mud flap hangers. The last one was getting thin and would have been changed had I made it back to the house before it blew. If you keep a close eye on the tire pressure you should be alright running them. People seem to have less trouble with caps in the winter months. I have found a good distributor who will sell me new tires for not much more than a cap. I would never put them on my tractors because of my fairings. When they do blow, they can do some serious damage. Those sections are rather expensive.

OK Thanks for the info. I also heard that they do well in the winter months. I guess because they don't get quite as hot. What brand do you guys run/recommend? Also any ideas on a good price in Atlanta ga or close by.

I like yokohama`s, a good recap is as good as a virgin tire but for the price I pay for brand new tires its not worth the time hunting down good recaps.

Diprima Tire is in north Georgia at the Tennessee line. They are distributors and have several different brands, including Yokohoma. It will be hard to beat their prices. They don't put the tires on, but you can throw them on the truck and drive 8 miles to a truck stop or less than 5 miles to a couple of tire stores to have them mounted. They are only a few blocks from I-75. If you are interested, I can get their number for you.
