Advice on Injector Cleaner
 
Has anyone used the Lucas Injector Cleaner?

If so, did it clean the injectors, and were you satisfied with it?

Also if you do not use Lucas, what do you recommend?

Go buy a quart of transmission fluid. Pour about a pint in each tank as you fill up. If you have larger tanks you may want to use about a pint and a half. The fill up helps to mix the transmission fluid. It does as good, if not better job, than most anything I have tried and costs a fraction of what these specialty products cost.

GMAN is right, save your money and use the tranny fluid. A former co-worker of mine has the contract with Cummins to make their fuel injector cleaner. He has 2 workers that mix diesel fuel and some type of detergent, looked like Tide to me, pour it into the container, agitate and place on the pallet. Pretty low-budget when you think what this stuff costs at the dealer.

Does it matter what brand Transmission Fluid I use?

Do you add this with each fill up?

Has anyone heard of using 1 gallon of gas per tank on fill up?

I have known of some who have used gas in their diesel. I don't think that is a good idea. It is more combustable and could be harder on the engine. Just get some transmission fluid, any brand will do. I don't think you need to put it in with every fill up. About every 3rd tank should do it.

In the old days we would use Gas to help to stop gelling in the winter, and always used tranny fluid for the injectors. 2 to 4 gallons of gas mixed with 300 gallons of fuel wont hurt the motor. We would also use liquid ether in the tank for the winter fuel, but this practice was rather dangerous.

I have to disagree with this 100%. While ATF has a lot of detergent in it, it isn't designed to operate at combustion temperatures, and will likely leave a residue on the injectors, as ATF (and its components) are not designed to combust.

Stick with injector cleaner - it is desingned and formulated to clean the injectors, without leaving a residue behind.

The transmission fluid is more of a lubricant for the injector than a cleaner, as the injector cleaner also doubles as a lubricant. When I was a kid I remember my dad dumping tide into carburetors and inlet plenums to remove carbon buildup especially on yard trucks and local trucks. I'm too scared to try it.

I'm sure Tide would do just as well as Transmission fluid at cleaning injectors, except it would smell better.

Put it this way - if Tranny fluid was meant to be an injector cleaner, they would sell it as such - companies LOVE cross promoting their products. But, strangely, the Transmission fluid companies are silent on this. I wonder why........

I would hate to try and get a warranty claim through on an injector with transmission fluid residue all over it.

Shop: "What did you put in your fuel?"
You: "Transmission fluid"
Shop: "Why?"
You: "Cuz some guy on the internets told me to"
Shop: "Are you braindead??"
You: "Apparently"
