dyno
Hello, can some tell me what exactly a dyno does and the cost to get one. I have a Det. engine 470. Thanks

Essentialy a dyno measures engine parameters and performance. They typicaly give you things like manifold pressures, engine hp, hp at the wheels, egt's and a whole host of information. To include blow by.
FYI - many people are dissapointed in what they see on a dyno print out. A 475 hp motor isn't gonna make that a the wheels. There is drag caused by fluids, engine wear, driveline and tires. If you have your engine run on the dyno - the shop should have the standards for your engine combo and can tell you if it is performing correctly. That is to day within specs for your Detroit and what they consider acceptable for driveline loss. As to cost - I never priced one out - but I imagine it's normal shop labor or a flat fee that included labor. It takes a tech to run one and read the results. Obviously if you are simply asking for a diag. it is gonna be less. Now if you want the tech to sit and tune your motor and confirm on the dyno, go back and forth to squeeze all the hp/torque you can outta the motor - this adds up in $$$. |
dyno
Thanks for the info duck.

Hey duck, you seem to know alot about dynos.
Do dynos show efficiency, also known as BSFC or "brake specific fuel consumption" That would be a really good way to compare different engines, etc.. thanks. |

Whoops- not a put down to mechanics. There really ARE good mechanics at a lot of places. It's just that the bad ones steal their thunder. |
Allen -- let me get back to you on the dyno thing - it prob depends on model of dyno and they type of run they do - basic vs par.
Dyno time isn't a toy - some drivers seem to think it is but they are expensive to buy and run. You need a high qualified tech so it's not something thats used for giggles - mostly as just a diagnostic tool. |
