good lord

so me and the wife and my parents are drivin back from ft lauderdale with my boat on I95 and I get stuck behind this ratty old trailer, since it was wonderful west palm beach and I knew I wasn`t changing lanes during morning rush hour I settle in, to get to the point after a couple minutes I get to reading the back of the trailer...

"get the money and miles you deserve, owner operators make 84 cents per mile loaded and empty plus fuel surchage, call cardinal logistics today"

84 cents!?! thats only a few cents over my break even point and I dont have a truck payment! I can`t believe people would even consider it but there it was going down the road right in front of me :?

That tells you what the company thinks of drivers... Obviously, we don't deserve much. Still the "DRIVERS ARE A DIME A DOZEN" mentallity.

If it were not so serious, it would almost be laughable offering that rate. Drivers sign on to this type of carrier because they don't know anything about running a business. Some carrier's take advantage of their ignorance and lack of experience. You can rest assured that they are not hauling freight for $1/mile. I have seen invoices and contracts from carriers who lease owner operators on before who have rates over $2/mile. Rates are not usually all that low unless you get hooked in with one of this type of carriers or an unscrupulous broker. There are some brokers who will double broker loads.

Company drivers should be paid that much!

Cardinal pays the miles plus a minimum base salary for showing up or to guarantee you will be there, and a fuel surcharge. I know some guys who work there and they are doing pretty good.

About $1250 net after all expenses, insurance, fuel, maintenance, tags, permits, taxes, tolls.

Well, i'll take your word for it, and wouldn't ask for details.... but in any case, i wouldn't call it a "pretty good money", for the whole week work.
I hope, but i doubt, when you've said "all expenses", you include that 4 grand tire change, or 15 grand overhaul, that they might need tomorrow, health insurance, and vacations and holidays pay...

I've worked Sunday thru Tuesday this week, and have made that much net, including all of the above....
Not bragging, just trying to give you a comparison... :) 8)

That truck will probably be bought and sold, Leased, 3 times in a couple of years.
.84c is a recipe for disaster.
