O/O Union
Subscribetell me if this is a good idea, lets say that o/o form a sort of a union, every driver would still do their own thing, but if even 100 drivers joined they can get deep discount on health an truck insurance, and lets say the union fee is $20 a month, would be enough to pay a secretary to handle faxes, call brokers and shippers, and call health insurance when needed, receive and send faxes, if you come to truck insurance agent and tell him you have a 100 customers or more, you will have discount for sure, and as more drivers join you can have more then one secretary , if something of this sort was available to me for like $20 a month, seems like a good idea, i know many drivers would love to have someone helping them out and keeping track of everything, especially for so cheap, so tell me what you think.

I think if you contact the Teamsters..you might find that the West Coast O/O's that pull "Cans" out of Seattle, Oakland, and SoCal did Unionize...back in like 92 or 93. I don't think it got the O/O's one thin dime...but made the Teamster more than a couple.Originally Posted by abc123

 I cannot see a Union Secretary working for $20 bucks per driver per month...unless you had say..1000 drivers signed up. And...She/He won't be making any phone calls for you either!!!

I don't think you can offer office services for $20/month and pay your overhead. There are services which will do your IFTA taxes from about $25-50/month per truck. OOIDA offers insurance. I have been able to negotiate better rates on my own. I think with technology, most who run their own authority would do best by having someone at home or have a fax/printer/scanner and laptop with an air card in the truck with them. On the surface, it sounds like a good idea, but there are a lot of insurance companies who will look at truckers as individuals rather than as a group. I think the most attractive thing would be discounts on insurance, primarily health insurance. Of course, if you could find a way to offer discounts on cargo and liability insurance, then all the better. I considered joining the ATA (American Trucking Association) mainly for the discounts on truck insurance. I was able to get better pricing on my own, plus I don't like the way these people are heading with the speed limiters, etc., In reading your post, I am assuming you are talking about those of us who run our own authority rather than someone leased to a carrier.
