It usually takes New Mexico about 6 weeks to get your permits back to you. Unless you have it in your possession, you will need to stop at the first port of entry and buy one. I have asked them about it before, but all they would tell me is that it takes about 6 weeks.

I called one time and talked to a lady in that department. I asked her why it took so long. She said that it was because they were a little laid back in New Mexico.

Also because Gov. Bill Richardson likes to spend state funds on important things like re-investigating the Billy the Kid case.

Proven to be false concerning a Old Guy(forgot his name) who lived in Texas and claimed to be "The Kid"
He did have lots of Info that it seems only the Kid would know.
Pat Garrett was Billy's best bud and that's why the whole thing concerning Pat Killing The Kid went astray.

this thread has helped me considerably, especially since I'm sitting here in El Paso headed to Phoenix in the a.m. and was wondering how it works in NM.

Pat Garrett was Billy's best bud and that's why the whole thing concerning Pat Killing The Kid went astray.
The guys name was Ollie "Brushy Bill" Roberts.

Here's a good page disputing Brushy Bill's claims on being Billy the Kid:

For those who didn't know, Pat Garrett was himself gunned down in 1908 outside of Las Cruces, NM while on horseback reportedly over a failed land deal. There were also rumors that his shooting might have also been tied to the dissapearance of Albert J. Fountain, who was a famous Texas "Radical Republican" polician who would later settle in La Mesilla, NM. He dissapeared with his son on February 1, 1896. Garrett was the sheriff of Dona Ana County at the time and headed the investigation. This and the failed land deal earned Garrett plenty of enemies in this area.
