Wondering what my chances of getting hired are
I just got my class A a few days ago.
Im 24 years old, and im really eager to start working. Im willing to do interstate or intrastate i dont mind. I wanted to get your guys' opinion, though. I have a misdemeanor which i got when i was 19. Its lewd conduct with a minor. My work experience also isnt very impressive, just a few retail jobs here and there after high school, longest held was 6 months. The time in between jobs was largely spent in college, but a good portion of the time, perhaps a year, was spent not doing much of anything. So i just want to know, what are my chances of getting my foot in the door? |
The spotty work history will hurt you I think more that the the misdemeanor. You need to get the job apps out like yesterday! Don't give up on the big training companies but I think your going to have to 'settle' for someplace a little less known and that pays a bit less till you prove yourself. One good thing is there's always an empty seat somewhere, you just have to find it.

About your misdemeanor: Were you sentenced to jail time?? Have you been discharged from probation?? If so, then for how long?? Regarding monthly reporting requirements, attending classes and/or performing community service requirements: Did you satisfy those conditions satisfactorily?? Are you on extended or lifetime RSO classification??
Ten years ago, if you had a Class A, a diploma from a wholesale freight relocation university, the ability to register a pulse, fog a mirror, and pass a drug test, and as long as you hadn't mugged a nun, you could quite likely find someone who would take a chance on you. Now, the industry is a whole lot different than it was when I was in it. What do you have to convince a prospective employer that he/she should assume the risks of hiring you?? |
No mention of where you live. If you are willing to re-locate, I give your chances of finding a good job at 100%.
If you live in the sticks like I do, you will find a good job, if you keep looking and don't give up. May take a lot longer to find a job, but persistence has never failed me. |
To Useless:
I was not sentanced to any jail time. I have been discharged from probation for about a year now, maybe more. I just had to attend some SCA meetings and yes i had no problems with completing that. I am not on RSO classification, nor have i ever been. I may not have an impressive resume but i believe that i have a lot to offer, i just need a chance to prove it. Im young, so i think that is always a plus. I am also a good driver, Ive only gotten one traffic ticket and that was 5 years ago, and i think 2 camera tickets which were also a long time ago. Repete: yeah i agree, my work history is bad, but it is true that i was attending college in between the jobs. So i hope that the employer will see that i was atleast doing something. Thanks for the replies everyone. I am going to begin applying tomorrow, wish me luck! |

Years ago I was in on the hiring at two places I worked at. It might not be fair but if I wasn't impressed in the first few seconds I rarely gave them a second shot. |

Congratulations on getting into trucking. Depending on what details the hiring person sees on the "background check" I think you will get hired. But there may be an asshat or two among your coworkers who will give you some static about your record. Good luck!
