Canadians hauling domestic freight
One of my xenophobic friends and I were discussing cross-border trucking between Canada and the US, and he insisted to me that Canadian carriers can only haul freight into and out of the US, and not haul freight that stays inside the country...can't find much about it online, is this correct?

That's correct. Same goes for US drivers hauling Canadian freight. In or out only, no hauling inside of CA.

They are supposed to only haul freight that goes to a city close to a border, such as Detroit or Buffalo, but I have witnessed them doing multiple p/u and drops on their way back to Canada.
But yes they are allowed to haul between 2 US cities. |

Canadian carriers are not allowed to pick up freight originating in the US and delivering the same freight to US destinations.
Freight that originated in Canada may be delivered to multiple points with in the US. Canadian carriers may also pick up at multiple points in the US so long as all of the freight the are picking up goes to a Canadian destination(s). They are supposed to only haul freight that goes to a city close to a border, such as Detroit or Buffalo, It is Mexican trucks that are suppose to stay within "X" amount of miles of the border. |
I've done multiple drops in Canada from Calgary, to Edmonton, to vancouver when I would run HHG. Most of the time, I'd grab my E-manifest and jump the border, with the exception of the one time I hauled a crated Indy car out of Vancouver.

"can't find much about it online, is this correct?" Check NAFTA, but I don't think there're any limits. That's why the Teamsters have their panties in a wad about Mexican companies doing the same thing, but it could be a skin color or an Espanol thing. BOL

The laws that effect much of what foreign carriers can and can't do within the USA is found under immigration law.
NAFTA was suppose to open up the US and Canada to Mexican carriers and extend to them the same policies the US and Canada have with each other. |
