Medical / Dental Care on the Road

Well I have an abscessed tooth, I have called probably 10 dentists in the area about getting an antibiotic prescription but all of them won't call one in unless I go in for a visit. None of them have truck parking (surprise surprise), and all are trying to refer me to a hospital. I really don't want to go to a hospital because I don't have insurance. So anyone have any ideas? Not to mention that tomorrow I load up to go to Cali (Im in VA), so it isn't like I am going to have much time after today, I will have 4 days to get to cali which means I will be doing 11 hr days for the next 4 days!

Go to a ready care place, .....walk in doctors' offices. They should be able to see you. You'll probably have to take a taxi. Cheaper than an emergency dentist visit. They'll treat your infection and you can go to a T/S with a dentist when you get a chance or google dentist for your next load assignment. HTH

Man I just went into the T/S to go to the bathroom and I look like the elephant man in the mirror! I am going to have to go to local hospital, I called a few places around here and the hospital is my only option.

I have had abscesses like this before, and it is not safe to let them go untreated, can actually be deadly.

What part of Ca are you going to, the dentists my wife goes to kicks butt. He just pulled a tooth that was in the same condition that yours is in. Took him about 5 min, no pain, was back eating real food the next day. Your probally going to SoCa, but if your ever up around Hollister he is the man to see. I was a walk in to boot

Well I went to the hospital, all I was expecting was a simple here is a antibiotic script, but noooo, the dr decided to drain the abscess, put me on a 1 hour antibiotic drip, did some blood tests, took x-rays. He walks back in and says, "I want to schedule you with an oral surgent tomorrow" I was like what, I am supposed to get a load going to cali tomorrow!!!

But at either rate I got a script for antibiotics and happy pills :) Not that I can really use the happy pills :(

Well I highly doubt it will be done pro bono

matcat 04-07-2009 01:16 PM

Well on the subject of happy pills, are they legal if I just take them at night after I am done driving? Or does the FMSCA say I cant take them at all

repete 04-07-2009 07:52 PM

some of the truck stops have that PDMD office in them and I believe some also have dentist's in them check them out. I got a flu shot there at no charge and they are really helpful

I'll tell you my story. It was my first week on a mentor's truck, think you all know i sat in a Wal-Mart DC while he took 5 days of hometime. I had an abcess, no insurance, and finally went inside, and one of the guys said thats what it looked like, and that it can be deadly. He was nice enough to drive me to the local hospital (at 2a) and they gave me two shots, and a couple perscriptions which i picked up at the Wal-Mart. I told them i was a truck driver, and needed documentation showing i could take the perscription drugs and that it would not make me drowsy. I got said paperwork, and faxed it into my terminal's safety coordinator, just to cover my tail.

I didnt have any insurance, and just the visit and two shots cost me $900+. Seriously thinking of just getting some time off, and going in and getting all my teeth yanked out so i dont have to worry about brushing anymore...LOL

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think you can even have them in your possession in a CMV.

What did he prescribe you? I was given a script for Amoxicillin-clavulanate 875-125mg for antibiotic, and Vicoden 5mg for pain.

I can't find it anywhere in the green book, and I've looked all over it. There are plenty of entries about getting your medical cert while being prescribed certain medications, but I can't find anything about the use of prescriptions.

Obviously you can't take anything that will impair your ability to drive, and vicoden most certainly fits that description, and I would never take one while driving, but I want to know if I can take them after I am done driving for the day. I can deal with the pain while driving, too much mental focus on driving to think much about the pain, but when it comes time to sleep, the pain just keeps me up all night :(

I didn't fill the script yet, and last night I did take one that the hospital gave me after I drove back to the T/S from the hospital just to see how it would make me feel. I slept like a baby and woke up refreshed. So I don't think it would effect me driving using it just at night, but I am not going to fill the script until I know for sure I can do so legally.

Schedule I drugs are not allowed in CMV.

Just so you know there is no such thing as a schedule 1 drug that is prescription :) Schedule 1 is used for all drugs that have no to little medical use. It is actually a Schedule 3 drug.

Though some states do have a prescription modal for medical pot, it is not federally legal.

Only 10 people originally where a part of the federal program, they stopped doing it, only a handful are still alive. It was a very short lived federal program.

One of the things i got was a "work status report" form that i faxed to my company. at the bottom, in hand written note reads, "Kevin is OK to drive with the medication given in the ER and medication that was perscribed."

the two medications i was given was Anaprox DS and Pen Vee K. And in the ER i was given two shots of something in the butt. =) swelling didnt really start going down till late the next morning.

And from what I was told, you cannot even have NyQuil in the truck.

Anaprox DS is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, it is a non narcotic pain medication, probably gave that to you because it has no drowsy effects. It is usually prescribed for Menstrual cramps or Arthritis ;)

The shots in the butt where most likely one for pain and one for antibiotic.

Yeah nyquill contains DXM which can make you drowsy, as well as alcohol.

matcat 04-08-2009 02:08 PM

Well I went to Walmart to get my antibiotic script filled, I almost had a heart attack, $62 for my antibiotic!!! I was like wtf, I have never paid more then $10 for antibiotics! Pharmacist said the one I got is strong and much more expensive.

not sure which way you may be heading to California but I know the Iowa 80 has a walk in dentist office right there in the truck stop. There was even a story about the guy on Yahoo recently. He also runs a local office in Walcott but splits his time between there and the Iowa 80 if i remember right.

Michigan allows such use. Monday of this week they were having people get a card from the state's health department. You obtained the card if you had a doctor's prescription for it. The news showed the people standing in line for their card. I think I saw my youngest in line :hellno: ;)

After doing a fairly quick random sampling and research of the Schedule 1 drugs I found that many of them were prescribed at one time or another and some of them were used as recently as the 1980's. This was just looking at maybe 5 or 6 of those listed. One I found is still used on occasion in hospital settings, and another I found is said to still be used in parts of Europe.

That is because at one time most of those drugs where not schedule 1. In the USA no Schedule 1 drug is legally allowed to be prescribed by FEDERAL law. The only exception to this is Pot, and that is only on a state level, it is still not allowed on a federal level. MDMA is a great example of a drug in the 70s and 80s that started off unscheduled, then became schedule 3 I believe and was prescribed for a short time, but when it became popular recreationally the government bumped it to schedule 1 therefor dissallowing it.
