New to Business, question about "Temp" work.?
Hi, i am new to the site, & new to the biz..
I am wondering about temporary work. Is there such a thing, & if there is, what would be my best bet.? My normal job on a job by job basis, so i can be off work for weeks at a time, but then working for weeks at a time, so im looking for a way to earn money on the side using my class A license, when im off of my usual job. I live in Long Beach, CA & i know there is tons of trucking going on in the area. (Port of Los Angeles) I dont mind going away for a few days or even just one day trips, & am new to it, & i would love to earn some money while getting some behind the wheel time. Please ask questions if i am not giving enough facts for anyone to make a good recommendation. Thanks for any insight.. |
Your best bet would probably be to talk to the LTL (less than truck) companies in your area about being a casual, part time driver. You could also try lumber yards, commercial waste hauling, etc and see if they need part time drivers to fill in on days off, sick days, and vacations.
Your biggest problem though may be your lack of experience. |
most Co want exp and insurence co demand it, you can try the temp agency's also talk to some of the local farmers you may very well pick something up there alot sooner than with a trucking company. BTW how long ago did you get your cdl? Most place's want a cdl school grad to be "fresh " from school

I'll try some of those in the area.. (lumber yard, etc.) Not many farmers here though.
I got my CDL in Nov. Could you explain what LTL means.? Is it companies that use smaller than 18 wheelers.? or just places that supply the truck or what does that mean.? Thanks |
"Temp" Work?
LTL = less than truckload. Think Yellow, ABF, Overnite, etc.. BOL

I have worked casual for Penske Truck Rental. Mostly filling in for regular drivers and shuttling vehicles between locations.

I believe Ryder had casual drivers at one time. They filled in when a driver went on vacation or had to take time off.
