Colorado Chain Laws
Now I know that they aren't lifted till the end of May, but, if you go across 70 without any, what are the chances of getting caught for not having them, and what will they do if they catch you?
|
They have Laws  Hell I have been running in Ca now all winter with out any chains, I run into Nv and Az, no one has busted me yet

To the best of my knowledge CO like CA does not require commercial vehicles to carry chains, but does require them to be used when conditions warrant it as determined by the state. If you are caught not using them you get shut down until you chain up and fined, and in CO at least if you are caught not using them because you blocked the road the fines get bigger.

This load has a stop in Pueblo and a stop just outside of Grand Junction, so I will have to cross 70... but have no chains.

You should be fine so long as it doesn't snow and the chain law goes into effect. If that happens you will need to shut down until the chain requirement is lifted.
I would listen carefully to the weather and make sure you have (303) 639-1111 in your cell phone and call about the road conditions when you get into the area. |
Pueblo to Grand Junction via I-70, 356 miles
Pueblo to Grand Junction via US-50 288 miles, goes over Monarch Pass but not a bad road. Violations - The fine for not carrying chains on I-70 between mileposts 163 and 259 from Sept. 1 to May 31 is $50 plus a $17 surcharge. Statewide, the fine for not chaining up when the chain law is in effect is $500 plus a $157 surcharge. The fine for not chaining up and subsequently blocking the highway is $1,000 plus a $313 surcharge. http://www.dot.state.co.us/Publicati.../ChainTips.pdf |
You say its a good road? I will consider it.

I make that run across there regularly.......When the Chain law is on for Monarch, and I'm ultimately going east/south,I'll drop down Co.114 east of Gunnison to Saguaghe, then south down 285 20 miles, cut east thru Center over to Hooper, south into Alamosa then east on 160 to either I-25 or US 287....That Pass on 114,as well as La Veta on 160 are just bumps compared to Monarch..... |
