What US states have the best/worst roads?

I wanted to ask you guys, the experts, for your opinions on this. Based on road conditions, frequency of construction, poor signage, lack of services/rest areas/truck stops, etc, which US states do you feel have the worst roads, and why? I'll start things off with my opinion:

Best Roads: Texas, Tennessee, Missouri (most of it)
Worst Roads: Pennsylvania, Colorado, New Jersey, Michigan

So what do you guys think?

Bump. Doesn't anyone have any opinions they would want to share on this topic?

Anybody know why the roads around NYC and Long Island are so darn rough? Seems as though the roads are almost as bad as the traffic. I can not stand the Long Island Expressway.

tjv189 02-05-2009 02:28 PM

It could be because of the heavy amount of traffic those expressways on Long Island endure, but I don't know.

I was on I55 in southern Mississippi and Louisiana last fall. Man, that road was rough! Just about knocked every filling out of my mouth! :eek2:

I-40 east of OK City is rougher than a cob. They are always doing construction, but it will knock ya out of the seat.

U.S. 211 from Luray VA right off of I-81 to U.S. 522 that road is unbelievable!! It's Divided into two parts but that part through The National Park is crazy!!!

The long island expressway from exit 22 out east to riverhead exit 70 is actually some of the smoothest roads in new york city... Everywhere else in the 5 bourough is absolutley pathetic tho. Esecially 278 thru queens/brooklyn. Scary dangerous roads..... For me driving nj ny ct md de ma pa..... The worst stretch of road right now is route 78 in new jersey east and west a few miles before the pa toll booth. Horribleeeee and its been like that for a long time, just over the last year tho its turned into a nightmare. I put the hazards on and slow down to 25 miles per hour. I hit my head on the roof once to many times on that stretch

When did they start allowing trucks to transit National Parks??:confused:

I dread I-65 south through Louisville and I-20 around Birmingham.

Mr. Ford95 02-28-2009 06:45 AM

Stan, you can transit Rt. 33 thru Shenandoah National Park in a truck along with Rt. 211. I know Malaki has been on 33 a time or two coming out of WV. If a sign is not present your legal since both are Federal Highways.

I think VA is fast becoming one of the worst with roads. Since we are flat broke, Gov. Kaine has cut out all re-paving projects and any road construction that is not being privately funded. If don't get a big chunk of the govt. stimulus our roads will be junk in no time. I-95 is in bad shape for a good majority of it thru here.

Hawkjr 02-28-2009 09:07 AM

Hell Mr. Ford, Go down 295 from 95 back to 64 west.. you want to talk about a ride man!! hell the part of the road that wasn't paved back last summer is horrible up and down I-295, and 64 into the Beach isn't a smooth ride neither!!

Okie Dokie!

I'm so used to the western parks....Yellowstone, Glacier, Teton, Rainer...Yosemite....No trucks.
I think they even made Grand-Staircase a no truck's zone...but I am not sure. Haven't been that way in 25 years.

I've never been on 33 or 211 in VA. Only I-81, I-85, I-95 and I-64.
