It is ultimately the driver who must decide whether road conditions warrant continuing on their journey or shutting down. It is the driver who will pay the consequences for his decision. Most carriers will support the driver if he shuts down due to road conditions. They would prefer the driver to be safe and the load to get their safely rather than taking a chance.

WW . . Thanks for the repost . . the only comment on the original thread was yours. I was a little surprised that no one else picked up on it.

I would add a couple of points . . First, someone mentioned using the Qualcomm to CYA and I agree. The other side of that would be a driver being "urged" to move along despite bad weather. A QC "order" for you to get rolling might make you feel a little better about the situation but it isn't going to do you any good should something terrible happen. Plaintiff's lawyer is still going to skin you alive in addition to seeking a bigger judgement from your employer.

Second, through the course of training and orientation, employers like to highlight a lot of regs they feel are important for you to know and they probably placed a lot of emphasis on how they interpert them and how they want you to abide by them. I would encourage Drivers to read all of the regs. Many, like the one referred to here, ultimately work to your benefit and they are, after all, the rules of the game.
