When is a good time to commit to company while in school
Hey everyone got 3 weeks left of school and wondering when should i commit to a company. I have 6 offers and narrowed it down to 3. im just trying to figure out should i wait til i graduate or commit now?
Please advise. |
When To Commit
None of the above, before you enroll. BOL
|
The correct answer is:
After you have done research to determine which company is the best fit for you. It doesn't follow any predetermined time table. |
What are the three if you don't mind us asking.
|
well im down to TMC, Maverick, or US Xpress
I also have offers from werner, swift, and usa truck, but have basically ruled them out |
I came to this crossroads last year at this time and stayed at my former job till the spring so I could get the hang of flatbeding in the spring and summer months and not jump in the middle of winter. If you do go the flat route just take your time, The trailer floors can be slippery and the climbing up and down can be hazardous at times. And never ever walk backwards on a load!

thanks for the advice jumbo which company would you reccommend out of the 3 i am down to
|
To tell you the truth, I wouldn't feel right giving my opinion on where you should work. You have to see where you think you would be the best fit. I tried applying at TMC but got fed up with them not returning my phone calls and moved on to what I think is a much better job with a smaller company. I don't have a fancy truck but, It is a comfortable truck for what we do. I have stayed out 2 weeks but by choice to take loads that nobody else wanted. All trucks are just tools you use. Look at what benefits are offered and what they cost you. Look at their freight lanes as compared to where you live. If you are just using this first job to get the experience for a local or better job think about whether or not you want to stay with this particular company for the year or so you may need for the experience. Have you looked into Ryder or Ruan for jobs closer to you? Sorry if this post got too long.

IMHO you should not "commit" to a company before you graduate or at the very earliest during the final week of school. Keep researching your current choices as well as looking for other possibilities.
|
u turn what company would you reccommend out of my remaining choices?
|
If there is a truck stop around you go out and find some drivers working for those companies and talk to them. cut through all the complaining and bitching and ask serious questions

im not asking for someone to make thedecision for me, im the kind of person who thinks things through before making a decision. I ve talked with several people from different companies on the cb and on the net most of which are pretty happy where they are. im just nearing the poin where school is done and I don't want to make the wrong decision

Bigpapa, Have you tried COWAN or D.M. Bowman? Cowan is Baltimore based and Bowman is out of Williamsport. Also, not sure what you think of hand unload but DOT Foods has a location in Williamsport also. |

If you are sure that you have applied at all the companies that are available to you go ahead and make commitment.
1. Maverick 2. TMC 3. US EXPRESS (DID NOT KNOW THEY RAN FLATBED OR AT LEAST I have never seen one) Have two trainees that went to US and they are both happy there. |
Yeah maverick is my first choice right now. I usx doesnt run flatbed, i was going to go there til i talked to quite a few of maverick drivers who have given me some good info and insight about the company. Plus I think the us xpress might get boring after a while driving from distribution center to a home depot dropping the trailer and picking up another one that might a little monotonous.
At least at maverick i'll learn regular flat bedding and doing glass. which will look better on the resume if i ever decide to change companies down the road. |
