medical question

hi everyone i went to the prime student driver program, i passed all the tests... but when it came time for my phisical i put down the medication i was on and they sent me home, im curently on paxil, and risperdal i know for a fact paxil isnt a dot disqualifying drug. But dose anyone know about the risperdal i have been on this med for about 2 years with no side effects or dose someone have a link for the list of meds that do disqualify a driver.???im supost to get a letter from my phycitrist and send it to my recruter so am i screwed or are they playing the cya (cover your a!@) game with me any help would be great thank you. travis

Drugs dot com lists RX by name and listed this about your meds.

What should I avoid while taking Risperdal?

While you are taking Risperdal, you may be more sensitive to temperature extremes such as very hot or cold conditions. Avoid getting too cold, or becoming overheated or dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather and during exercise. It is easier to become dangerously overheated and dehydrated while you are taking risperidone. Risperdal can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Avoid using other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold medicine, pain medication, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety). They can add to sleepiness caused by Risperdal.

I think it's safe to say that you shouldn't be driving an 80,000lbs truck while you're taking that medication.

u think? but do u know i dont mean to be a a!@ but i dont want your thoughts i want what the DOT says well i guess i should stop taking risperdal then, im not going down without a fight

The DOT is only interested in their list of dis qualifiers.

The FMCSA has some additional rules that prohibit the use of legally prescribed controlled substances, but you will find they are derivatives of barbiturates, amphetamines, morphine, etc.

Companies however have a list of their own. Some of it is based upon liabilities and risk assessment.

We've done discussions on this subject before. It would be nice to compile some of this for easier access, and other topics that often bring new drivers seeking answers, and make it a sticky. Any one up for the job? :)

Stock up on the Paxil if you are with Prime.

If I were you, I would try and see a physician and explain your new career path. Then he can get you on some different meds after researching the side effects. Think of it like a poker game. You have already shown your hand to prime. Don't be surprised if they put you all in with only 2 outs. Just take your losses and move on to another game.

Try to get on with another company after you see your doctor and don't falsify your dot medical records. Not saying that you would, but this will follow you especially if you have already disclosed and listed it on your long form. You usually sign a release to disclose information. DAC provides information about companies you work for, been fired from and applied to. If you are ever involved in a preventable accident with serious injuries, It's a paper trail any decent injury attorney can easily follow. Something will work out, just look at all of your options.

Yet that is what you asked in the first post!?
As stated a company can set its own disqualifiers in regards to drugs.

Probably the best response yet:
