APU fuel tanks

:D While looking at some trucks on Truck Paper I noticed several trucks being advertised as equipped with APUs and having a 390 gallon fuel capacity. Do some trucks have a separate fuel tank for the APUs instead of them getting their diesel from the main tanks? 8)

I wouldn't think so. The truck must have a pair of 150 gallon tanks and another 90 gallon tank all hooked together. I don't see why anybody would wantt a seperate fuel tank just for an APU

Were these on super sleeper trucks? Not unheard of for some of those trucks to have an extra fuel tank to balance out the weight of fresh and grey water tanks.

There are some trucks with a dedicated APU fuel tank. This is so they can be filled as a "reefer" or filled with off road diesel to avoid paying road diesel tax on fuel used by the APU. All legal, by the way.

The only other alternative is to calculate the fuel use by the APU then file to have that fuel disallowed from Road tax.

Usually a dedicated APU tank will only be 25-50 gallons at best in size. I suppose you could use larger, but it would take a while to go thru and you would just be saddled with the extra weight.

APU feeding off the main tanks also helps to circulate

and keep the fuel from jellin the cold months

be nice if you could just run a hose back and suck off the reefer tank.

I know lots of folks with APUs and not one of them has an extra tank for APU fuel. Some of them have extra tanks for water (like a big bunk with an extra external aluminum tank- only used during summr). But not fuel. Some APUs are gasoline, which would obviously require a gas tank separate from the fuel tank. But I don't know anyone who went that route- it would be a pita to fill.
