An 8LL is basically the same pattern as a 9 speed... you have the 'H' pattern transmission.. doesn't matter what type of truck it's on. On the side, you'll have a switch, much like you will on a 13, 15, or 18 speed transmission. However, that's not used as part of the progressive shifting. That switch engages lower range gears in the transmission, which is sort of like placing the transfer case of a 4x4 pickup truck into 4L. Don't ever engage this while the vehicle is moving, unless you want to be without a transmission.
It shouldn't be difficult to get the hang of it.

I have been driving an 8 speed lo-lo at work lately. It is easy. Just drive it like an eight speed and leave the thumb switch in the hi position until you have to pull something REALLY heavy out of the dirt or up a hill from a dead start. Then just push the thumb button forward and put it in low gear BEFORE you start moving. Lo-lo also works in reverse, so you have 3 reverse gears.

on our dumps you have a flip up button and a button the side for low range, you shift 4 gears, then flip up the button and do the 4 over again, the side button engages low-low and has an interlock that prevents it from moving unless the gearshift is in neutral
