Except fot fuel stops I always tried to find the mom and pop truck stops. The triple T in Tuscon was one I hit when running I-10.There's another east of Beaumont also and the Spaceway in MS. I can't eat Wendy's anymore....:hellno::cry: Eating fast food will kill you. It is not easy to eat right when you travel as we do. Some of the major chains, such as Pilot offer limited menu's that are not necessarily very healthy. When I am on the road I try to eat vegetables at least once a day. Our bodies need more than a burger. Eating fruit and vegetables helps us to keep our weight balanced and to stay healthy. I think you can get much more for your money at most mom and pops. The food is usually less expensive and of higher quality. |

Have truck stops changed much the past 10 years?
There’s still a few good independents out there, but not many. TA just bought Romine’s on I-80 in Morris, IL, but hasn’t screwed up the restaurant… yet, but I’m sure they will given enough time. Then there’s Seven Feather’s on I-5 at Exit 101 (I think) in Canyonville, OR. That and Romine’s are the two best truck stop restaurants around, if you ask me. |
Independent Diner
Has anybody ever stopped at Mama Bear's restaurant off of I-79, Conneaut/Meadville exit? My dad always tells me that years ago, they were one of the few restaurants that would stay open late, and they'd advertise across a CB so truckers would know about them. I think the other two state highways close to them are 301 and 19. They've been changed to, I think it's Miller's Food Factory now, but it is still a local restaurant and the food is good.

For those of you that get to follow I-94 in WI, try stopping in at one of the "KWIK TRIP" truck stops, like at Tomah, WI, and enjoy the $3.99 breakfast buffet. Otherwise, you'll have to find some of the independant little "Mom and Pop" truck stops... Like WILDERNESS CROSSING, or ABBEYLAND TRUCK STOP, or "51 TRUCK STOP" in the central Wisconsin area. No, I won't say they are inexpensive anymore, but the food is actually prepared on-site.
Cheap meals became a thing of the past when fuel prices went up... Cost of delivery. |
I stopped into the Triple T in Tucson a couple of times and was hit up by hookers both times. I'd be careful in that place.

I pulled in there last summer and ate dinner. I still had a couple of hours left to drive but was a little tired and decided to spend the night there. After dinner when I got back to my truck there were some seedy characters hanging around and a driver was on the CB complaining that someone had just broken into his truck. I decided I wasn't as tired as I thought and headed on down the road. Good restaurant though. |
I had a guy try and sell me a CB once.He said he was a driver trying to money to get back home, you know the story. The radio looked like he just snagged it from a truck and he was nervous.I detained him as long as I could hoping the driver he swiped it from would spot us.He never came and the thief knew I wasn't buying and hookem'.
Life is hard enough and I don't like a thief.:pissedoff: The only lot lizards I've encountered were the ones my exteam-mate picked up. I'm not into that,I can hold off 3 or 4 weeks until I get home to my wife. |
