Waste Management Driver Trainee?

I am trying to get some info on the Waste Management Driver Trainee job/program (I have an interview at the Rochester, NY location next week).

The ad says you go through the driver training program and put on as a residential driver after you complete the training.

I filled out an online application and was told to call a "recruiter" the next day...

I tried to ask some questions about the program and pay but was told I was talking to someone working for a 3rd party recruitment call center, and the extent of what they do is screen people out for DWI's/driving records and then set up an interview for you.

I was hoping someone here might have info on the program? Pay? Hours while training? etc etc? What are you doing while training?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I don't really know anything about the program, but a friend of mine has been working there for almost ten years now, and loves it.

Does you friend driver Residential or Roll off?

stormothecentury 06-10-2008 07:37 AM

Residential mini-packer, last I knew.

Its good local work. Stable but boring. You will make roughly 1.5-2X per hour what you could earn doing OTR while sleeping in you own bed every night.

A friend of mine drives a residential packer and he gets paid piece work kinda. For instance, the computer says his route on Monday should take him 8 hours to complete. He can hustle and finish in 5 hours. He then returns to the yard and will pick up any uncovered routes (break downs, sick leave, etc) or just go home 3 hours early. He makes good money but Xmas time can be a pain because every route takes longer and they offer no extra pay. Truck fills up more regularly and he has to make more trips to the dump.

He actually prefers a route without riders. He would rather throw his own trash, says he can get done faster.

I will have to ask him about training. He has been there 5 or 6 years and loves it.

Residential trash is one driving job I couldn't do. No thanks. I have done some roll off stuff and even that can be a total pain in the ass. People want the boxes dropped in unbelievable spots. Then there's swapping out boxes that the empty needs to be in the same spot as the full one. In or out of the truck 10 times to get it done. And that's without having to put boards down on the ground. I used to have to do the same thing with trailers, customer would only give us 1 dock to use. This was at my previous job. I hear good things about Waste Management in the Rochester area. They do an excellent job of running the landfill near my house. They've been very kind to our fire department and town, of course, they were wanting to expand in to our town. But they really do a good job. 8) 8)

Thanks for the info everyone!

stormothecentury & marylandkw, it is good to know you guys have friends that have been there that many years and like it.

TK, What dump is that? The one on 5&20 between Canandaigua and Geneva? OR is it a different one?

Does the Rochester WM residential drivers dump at transfer station in Rochester or at a local dump?

The one near Geneva is the Ontario County Landfill. I used to run in there everyday. The one near my house is High Acres. I couldn't tell you where the WM guys dump for sure. Probably High Acres since they run it where as all the local companies tend to go wherever is closer whether it's the landfills or transfer station. 8) 8)
