Is there a difference between these 2 diesel engines?
 

PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, but a straight-6 engine sounds a lot like a Dodge diesel (kind of a low-pitched rumble), where as a V8 sounds like a Ford/Chevy diesel (more of a high-pitched sound).

Other than the sound, is there a difference performance-wise (including fuel economy, etc.)

(I've seen some International straight trucks that sounded like the Fords, while others sounded like the Dodge). :?:

Well...maaaybe that's becuase the Dodge is, in fact, a straight six...

while the Ford and the Chevy diesels are...V8s...kinda funny how that works!

BUT...all three are COMPLETELY different engines

Most all of your class 8 truck diesels are stright 6s. But dont forget one of the best class 8 diesel motor ever made in time. THE MACK E-9 500hp. V-8 Diesel.

Are all 18-wheelers Straight-6's?

And which engine is better, a straight-6 or a V8? (For a smaller truck, for instance an International 4200)?

there's always been a special spot in my heart for the 8V92 (silver) ... nothin' like the sound of a two-stroke V8 ...

In reality, there's lots of little differences between the engines, most of which make the inline engines more efficient for torque, where as v style engines are more efficient for higher-rev's and more horsepower.

I could go on for hours about the why's of all those things, but that'd just get long and boring, just attribute it to tortional forces being converted back into rotational forces, vs. the length of the crankshafts, etc, etc.

and is it just me, or does the 3208 sound more like a gas engine when it gets up to speed ... ?

I like V-8 Diesels myself. There is a guy around me with a 1989 mack superliner with a E-9 and that thing rolls coal out the pipes and will smoke any new 475-500hp new motors.
