US50 is definitely bad. However, I think US33 from Elkins to Harrisonburg, VA is worse.

Sandstone is not bad if you follow the rules. Stop at the mandatory brake check and then do the truck speed limit all the way down. Don't come hotrodding out of the brake check and you should be fine. Many a newbie gets caught on it because they don't know what gear to go down in since you don't have a hill pull to get to the summit. Beckley and the surrounding area are on a plateau, you drop off it at Sandstone on I-64 East.

Dad always hated going out to Elkins on 33 to tow back a breakdown. Long, windy ride from I-95 usually in the middle of the night. He has some stories from doing that run. Think he has some from I-68 also or somewhere up there around Cumberland, MD and the WV border from towing back breakdowns.

I've only been on US33 east of Elkins once in a truck. I picked up a load of charcoal in Parsons and my 1st delivery was in Harrisonburg. I figured - wow - it doesn't look too bad on the map. The road itself - HUGE difference.

It took me something like 7hrs to drive from Parsons to Harrisonburg. The bad part of that? It's only 102 miles.

Your either a crazy Brotherman or your pretty adventurous Maliki. I wouldn't even attempt going across 33 empty (in a big truck). Your braver than me.

I used to make a couple trips a week over to Culpepper Va back to Marietta, Oh. I was just pulling a 2 car trailer, not even close to the weight of a big truck. I have taken 33, 50 and 250 over to Virginia. I took 33 once and that was it, never again. I was honestly concerned about breaking the King Pin pulling some of those hills on 33.

Feather River Canyon used to be dangerous for trucks. If Donner (the old road and later the new) was closed we would go north on 395 to Suzanville then take it down, two lane, rub the rub rail around trees to make corners and check your tail lights on most of them. They closed it to trucks now over 40 feet

What's up with Donner Pass anyway? I don't find it difficult at all, but it's the ONLY pass I've ever been over (and there are still many I haven't) that has state DOT signs posted telling truckers to "let 'er drift" and "let 'em roll!" :shock: :shock: :lol: :lol:

Are they so scared I'll smoke my brakes that they are giving me the green light to SPEED a little down some of the hills and drift back up the next little rise?? :?

US64/US74 East from TN into western NC is bad. There is a cliff that hangs over into the westbound lane. Its a two lane winding road. A friend of mine side swiped another trucker while coming around the snake like road. Truck speed is about 35mph.

I saw it on a map and thought that it wouldn't be too bad. It took me forever to get out of there.

Douglas pass in colorado HAS to be the worst ! On some of the turns maybe 6-8 your trailer axels hit the shoulder side of on comming traffic, it cant get worse than that can it ?
