Are 15-speed trannies dead?
 

:D Looking at Truck Paper's website I've noticed that all the big rigs either have 9-speed, 10-speed, 13-speed, or 18-speed transmissions but have rarely seen any advertised with 15-speeds. Have they gone the way of polyester leisure suits, 8-track tape players, and platform shoes or are they still made and only used in very rare specialized applications? 8)

we have one, its a 98 pete 379 I hate it

I do not see them on spec sheets any more. They're more of a vocational transmission anyways. New 15 speeds also cannot handle torque very well.

mine has super 10 and since they unhooked the automatic part, I love it. a regular 10 speed is just too much work

There are plenty of 'trannies" around, but I think that most of them are now living in San Francisco!!

Now, as to whether or not the have 15 speeds??!!

Didn't they store the 15 speeds in the same back lot as the 23 speeds and the browning boxes??

They still produce a 15, at least Eaton Fuller does. It's basically set up as ten road gears and five deep reduction gears. Not much use excapt for in on/off highway vocational applications. My rock jockie friends swear by them.

The only reason you don't see as many 15's around anymore is that they don't have the torque rating of the 18 so the OEM's won't put them behind a big motor. If Eaton would have upgraded the trans to 1850 or 2000 I'd be running one today. IMO a 1450 15 is a better trans than a 1850 18.

In an application where you're doing heavy haul or running in steep hill country, the 18 would be a better choice because you can split every gear.
