Another Story

I have read some ggod advice on the Class A site and have a personal story to tell, so be nice please.Helpful answers not condescending putdowns.

I worked for an OTR Company for over 6 months.I decided to try local with an LTL Company so I told my boss I was leaving. His response was, "Turn in your truck, keys and comdata card today".I did this in person at the Op Center at his desk.He had me fill out a resignation letter and sign it.We exchanged some small talk and I shook his hand and left for the last time.I wondered why they wanted me to leave the same day but I guess that is how it's done.

The LTL Company wanted me to start right away, so a week or two notice wouldn't have been possible anyway. After about 2 weeks employment when I went in to get my check, the HR person told me the terminal manager wanted to see me.He told me,"I am sorry but I have to let you go because there was a discrepancy on what you listed as leaving one of your employers.I was stunned. They showed me where the employer had
said I was discharged for unsatisfactory performance but I had put down layed off. They said the LTL Company is very strict on this and that the reason given must be exact. So I was let go.

Will this go on my DAC report?
Since I was employed a short time, will I have to disclose this to another prosective employer?
If so will it keep me from getting another job?

Why did you tell the new comany that you was laid off??

The next time you decide to leave a company type or write out a 2 week notice.

driver10 03-18-2008 03:13 AM

Tried to play it down. It's not like I am an ex felon...sheeeeze!
No other employer has questioned it except the LTL.

driver10 03-18-2008 03:32 AM

Oh and by the way, the job was not in trucking that I was discharged from.

Your not telling the entire story, you said you quit the otr job, but then told the ltl you got layed off...

You are not making any sense. Are you saying the 2nd job was not in trucking?

You might make a good car salesman :? :?

driver10 03-18-2008 04:08 AM

never mind...I knew this would be too difficult for truckdrivers to understand.

LOL

matcat 03-18-2008 04:08 AM

Also put yourself in the companies shoes, they are hiring you, to drive a $150,000+ vehicle, filled with potentially millions of dollars in goods, they look over your app in more detail, check your references, CALL your previous employers, and find out you lied about your reason for leaving another company, now if I owned a trucking business and ran across this, I would think to myself, "If he is willing to lie on this app, whats to say he isnt going to be selling plasma tvs or tools from his load", not saying that you would ever do such a thing, but that is how employers think, if they cannot trust you, they cannot trust you, all it takes is a little lie to screw it up. This is one of the reasons why the trucking industry is so thorough in checking out your work history, your not in the dollar store selling cheap trinkets, your in a multi-million dollar valued vehicle, all by yourself, as your own accountability.

That is just wrong, you are painting a partial picture and expecting us to understand it when most of the canvas you are painting on is white with no detail.

I agree on this one! Lieing, playing down issues, and generalizing, all signs of a politician.

driver10 03-18-2008 04:43 AM

That's fine guys.Laugh it up.
I tried ...moving on...

matcat 03-18-2008 05:10 AM

You obviously didn't try very hard, or you would of included more details.

TimberWolf 03-18-2008 02:25 PM

Hey Driver10, No offense meant by any means however when I went to work for UPS Frieght they said they needed me right away too. I told them there was no way I could start until I gave my 2 weeks to my employer, it was only fair. they dealt with it and I have been there 8 months now...
When I was an executive Chef I would never hire anyone who was willing to leave a job with ougiving proper notice. If you will do it to one employer chances are good you will do it to me as well...

The problem here is NOT one of comprehension (for once!) It is in the way the O.P. presented his situation.

He QUIT the otr job.... but that is NOT the one that was questioned!

On his app for LTL, he listed ANOTHER (non trucking) job that he was FIRED FROM for poor performane IIRC. For THIS job.... he gave the "reason" as being "laid off!"

THAT is what the LTL company "caught" as a lie, or mistruth, and THAT is why they had to let him go.

Too bad he didn't join the forum and read enough BEFORE he tried to switch jobs, or he'd have KNOWN it was better to just tell the truth.

You straightened it out before I got to it Hobo.

Posters (and yes I'm guilty as well) need to read or reread a post to make sure its clear in your mind before making a comment.

Snowman7 03-20-2008 07:59 PM

His story is hard to follow but the job he was let go from was a previous non driving job. The way he told the story it seemed like the OTR job. Anyway the LTL job was probably a good job and most of those places dont tolerate lying on apps. I've seen it before.

You're not surprised by that are you?

But, in your defense..... the sun comes up 3 hours EARLIER here on the East Coast!

I just think it is a shame when a NEW poster comes on here and PRECLUDES his "story" with a PLEA for some real answers and NOT just quick criticism..... and then gets JUST THAT!

[He wouldn't even HAVE to "prelude" his question, except that he has READ enough of this board to know what to EXPECT!]

And often by those who have been here only a short time themselves!

I LOVE this site! But, we ALL have a responsibility here.... expecially if we respond on the NEW DRIVERS FORUM!

The poster also said:

Although, that is a SLAM against us all in general.... in this case, it was warranted! We rail against the impression the PUBLIC has of us.... yet we reinforce it with our responses at times.... even to one OF us!!

Granted.... HIS command of English, as it concerns giving clear details, was lacking.... but SOME here showed no better command, as they jumped him without even understanding him!

I SWEAR.... if they gave potential truckers an ASVAB test on English comprehension.... SOME on here would NOT BE DRIVING!

Luckily, for MANY on here, there is NO REQUIREMENT to KNOW what you are talking about before you ENGAGE your mouths / keyboards!!

And I can't help but believe that that LACK of comprehension shows itself everyday in your DRIVING!

Man.... I better stop now, BEFORE I get on a RANT!!

Great reply! I get sick of all the replies on here that come from smartass billy big riggers. Help one another out for god's sake! If you think its bad in this New Drivers forum, you should go to the O/O forum! Its like a freaking kindergarten class over there with all the he said/she said b.s. and bashing going around. Sad thing about it......the moderators kick all the informative members off and side with the trouble makers! I have started to notice a lot of helpful members not posting anymore. Guess they have gone elsewhere? I seldom post if I can't help someone out or offer advice, but this struck a nerve.

Twilight, I HOPE you aren't gonna "kick him to the curb" for that! I KNOW you got the right to.... it was pretty offensive for a MOD!

One of you once said, (or many times) that we tend to police ourselves!

Hamboner: Obviously, you haven't posted in a long time, but you've been "monitoring" the site. I always find that interesting. Equally, obvious is the fact that I cannot just sit back and "monitor." It has become very clear to me that there are MANY members who "lurk" these days, and many NEW members who have lurked for along time before speaking out! We should ALL keep this in mind!

But, I have to tell you..... you are WRONG about the quality of moderating on this board! And your DIRECT "challenge" or comment about our Mods offended ME!! (OMG, I'm defending the MODS! )

These guys/gals let ALOT get by before they act! And unlike SOME boards, they do NOT try to "steer" the discussions! They sometimes participate with opinions of their OWN.... and are willing to take the heat for them, if necessary!

I MAY have disagreed with them at times, even on their moderating, but it is beyond the pale to ACCUSE them of "siding" with special interest groups or members!

I would no more DEMAND it of you than THEY would.... but I believe you owe them an apology!

That is JUST my opinion!! It is ONE thing to make blanket statements blaming BUSH for everything.... but it is another to make such blanket statements about those who actually CARE about us, and are doing their jobs out of concern and support for us! Our mods are the GREATEST!
