Reefer fueling question

:D Assuming it's a 50-gallon fuel tank how long can a driver run a reefer engine before having to refuel on the average? Someone told me one time it can run five days on a tank of fuel but didn't know if that's true or not. 8)

Depends on:
If the weather is warm or cold(warm weather, the reefer runs more)
How good the insulation is on the trailer(older trailers tend to burn more fuel)
What temp the load is set at(see above two, they affect this), low temp settings run more
How many hours the engine have(older trailers burn more fuel)
This time of year our reefers can go about a week with out being fuled(temps are set at 33) but we are required to fuel the trailer when it reaches half a tank.
Best advice, when you fuel the tractor, check the reefer fuel.

Back in 2004, I was running a load of frozen strawberries from WA to NY, through NJ. Reefer set at 0F, I burnt through 30+ gallons per day in July.

Other loads set between 50F and 70F during the summer would need refueling every other day and only 20 gallons or so.

Fuel the reefer every day that it is in use. You can get at least 24 hours out of a tank.

Also always be sure to fuel the reefer any time you are going to drop the trailer regardless if the unit is in use or not.

Depends on the age and condition as well of the unit. I have had older units and trailers that went through 1/4 tank every 6 hours set on 36 continuous and I have had newer units go through 1/4 every 20 hours set on the same setting. There are alot of factors as mentioned that effect the usage.

I echo what the others have posted. I require my reefers to be refueled at the half-tank mark. You do not want to run out of fuel.... it is expensive if you do..
