Reefer fuel
 

Yesterday I went to fuel up and the pump that I was fueling from shut off at 50 gallons even though I was approved to pump 100 gallons.

Anyhooooo.... I went inside to get my receipt from the kiosk. The kiosk said that there wasn't a receipt available for me.

I then went to the cashier to get my receipt and I also asked why my pump shut off at 50 gallons instead of 100 gallons. She then tells me that I was only approved for 50 gallons of reefer fuel.

I told her that I didn't want reefer fuel. She asked if I put it in my tractor and I told her that I did. She then said that she hopes that it doesn't screw up my motor.

I've driven 527 miles with 50 gallons of mixed reefer fuel and road diesel going through my motor with no immediate signs of adverse effects.

So ummm, yeah.... What's the difference between reefer fuel and road diesel? I drive an '07 Volvo VN 670 with an ISX Cummins btw.

There is no difference between the fuels.

Taxes. That is the only difference.

There was either a computer glitch or you hit the wrong button when entering in info (or the clerk did if you called it in). Anyway reefer tanks usually are only 50 gallons, and to help prevent (or limit) tax fraud reefer fuel purchases are limited to 50 gallon max.

Reefer fuel is not taxed the same way road fuel is.

Uturn is right. Reefer fuel is non-tax fuel.
That's why they make red diesel, for farm use.
It's a pretty big fine, if you ever get caught with red diesel (or what most of us call, farm diesel) in your pickup, etc.

Thanks guys. In the back of my mind I kept thinking that reefer fuel is no different than regular road diesel. I was thinking that there would be separate pumps if they were indeed different.

Some places could be selling LSD for reefers and ULSD for the 07 engines.
Don;t wanna mix those up!

LSD can damage the exhaust system filters on 07 and newer trucks.

In my area they sell red dye fuel or off road fuel for farm, certain construction equipment and reefer. The only difference is the road tax is not included. And the red dye is added. I would run it all the time if I could get by with it on the road :lol:

What might have happened is that a reefer truck in front of you swiped his card and pushed the button for both truck and reefer fuel out of habit, but did not pump any reefer fuel.

So then you pull up and pump fuel on his card, then there is not a receipt for you.

As a reefer driver, I have done this and it is a real pain if the guy that fuels behind you does not catch it either. His pump shuts off before he is finished and then it takes an act of Congress to get it straightened out at the fuel desk.

You only do it once and then pay more attention from then on.

Bossleman/Pilot in Grand Island has a seperate pump for reefer fuel at their island-- it despenses Red Dyed Diesel .

If you got this by mistake in your tractor tanks-- keep the receipt- and hope you don't get stopped and Tested-- because you now have dye in your tanks.

In my scant 2 years or so on the road I have never had anyone look into my fuel tanks to see what color my diesel was.

I wonder if I could get some day-glo orange to put in there.... :)
