I dont believe they "require you" to do all that stuff, but it certainly wouldnt hurt to ask if they want you to go ahead and check the oil, fluids, and whatnot. They'll probably make you back into a spot too. Probably nothing too complicated though.

Road Test

Check some company web sites, many describe orientation and training. Some test you in the beginning and the end of training. There can be written tests also: Some of the bigger carriers give you book assignments to complete while on the road training. You can check the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations for what they have to do by law.

For my road test I had to couple the trailer, hook up the air lines. I took a 10-15 min. drive on and off of the interstate. When returned back to the yard I had to strait line back between two parked tractor trailers. Your road test will be alot easier than your DMV Test, and your company will not be as hard on you. You pretty much have the job and all they are doing is just evaluating what skills you need to touch up on and they will pass all of their observations of you onto your trainer. Don't sweat the issue. I asked the same exact question you did 2 months ago before my orientation and a trucker gave me the same advice that I'm giving you.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

for our road test, you take a truck that is already hooked up, go out on the 4 lane, drive about 10 miles, make a safe legal u-turn and come back to the yard and park it. nothing to it unless you cant drive

best thing to do an a hill TAKE YOUR TIME, dont let the traffic behind you intimidate you, let out the clutch slowly without giving it any gas until it engages, then accelerate smoothly.

anyone ever use there trolly brake when on a hill..............??

Bumper 02-03-2008 07:59 PM

When I went for my test drive with Crete I drove around town, put about 15 miles on the I 10 (was in Phoenix) and then back to the yard. Backed into a hole and disconnected the trailer and pulled the truck out.
End of test drive.

Pretty much the same with Cardinal.

If you are referring to "being on an upslope already at a dead stop"...yes, quite often and whenever necessary. Its one of the safest ways to do it.

All you need is to have some jackass get too close to your rear bumper on an upslope, and you neglect to use the trolly brake (aka: Johnson bar)....and roll back into the jackass....its gonna be your ticket and "preventable accident". Just be sure the brakes on the trailer are adjusted properly before doing this....as in a really good PTI. You could get a nasty surprise if the auto slack adjusters aren't, and the previous drivers who had the trailer were idiots too lazy to check or write the trailer up.

ok...........went on monday............they said there was no one to take me on a road test.......call back on wenesday...i do not know what kind of trans there running...i learned on a 10 speed...i guess i'll treat whatever they have as such.........
i'll keep ya'll posted............. 8) 8) 8)

I really don't think they would put you in an unfamiliar truck then on a hill with cars behind you and risk an accident. Every truck is different and will take you some time to get it down so your smooth.

As far as a hill goes, just keep your foot on the brake and let the clutch out till you feel the engine drag a little then let off the brake and you should creep ahead.

Good luck!
