After looking up Tualatin Valley Transport I found this little article. Not sure if they are a company one wants to drive for.
"As a former employee of Tualatin Valley Transport, Inc., a trucking company based out of Hillsboro, Oregon, though actually physical location of office and trucks is in Portland, Or, I have seen first hand how they treat their help. I was hired on as an HOURLY driver, worked my hours AND ALWAYS more (required), but they would only pay straight pay. They did not believe in 'overtime' pay of time and a half for hours over 40 in a work week. When I brought this up with them, they became irritated and I soon found myself out of a job...for trying to get them to pay me what I was owed. They came up with a bunch of made-up crap saying that I had been written up 4 times in two months. Funny, I've never seen anything before, or even now. When I asked to see these 'write ups', they said they were not at the Portland location, but at the Hillsboro location (their home.) Personally, I believe they had not filled out anyting, and the 'write ups' were either made up or hold incorrect information. They cheat their employees (have been doing it for years according to other drivers there....) but as they did not want to make waves and lose their jobs (always the threat), they remain silent. Well, I'm turning them over to the authorities and agencies that handle such matters. I hope they learn their lesson. A TIP: If you're from the area here, don't work for them." Not sticking up for them but if they are based out of Oregon they are not required to pay overtime. I am assuming that "Dave" took the job knowing what the pay was

Dave Beaverton, Oregon U.S.A. Can you point me in the direction of this article, or put me in contact with "Dave"? When I worked there, there was a Dave that I rode with a couple of nights, lost contact with him, would appreciate it. To new to PM you. Thanks |

Please clarify why a company based in Oregon does not have to pay overtime?
|
Truck driving does not fall under Federal or State labor laws that require employers to pay time and a half after 40 hours. E.g. Old Dominion, an LTL carrier, does not pay OT until you reach 60 hours. Most non-union companies follow suit. Do you know of any OTR companies that pay you OT after 40 hours?
|
Guess since I have always been in the OTR world of trucking I was not aware of the rules of local trucking. Good info to know when one is coming out of the OTR world and looking to go local.

If my brain served me correctly...and lo and behold it did!! I was thinking that our "sister company"....Carry Transit....a food grade tanker company, had just opened a new facility in the Portland, OR area....they did!!!
So, if you live there, and are tired of picking splinters out of your backside, and tired of sitting around not getting paid for your time, etc....go to: http://www.carrytransit.com and check out the company. Here is the link to the Portland terminal: http://www.carrytransit.com/terminals/PortlandOR.html You can look on Cyanide's post about Carry and Superior to see what the pay is all about. Make sure you look at Carry's pay schedules, they are slightly different than Superiors. Also, call the 800# for the Stockton, CA terminal and talk to the terminal manager there....get the actual pay rates for that terminal from him. There are minor differences around the country based on local costs of living, etc. |

If you are looking for a union job. Try Safeway, or Unifide Grocers. There is also Albersons, or WinCo.
|
I'm a Dave that lives in Beaverton and drove for Tualatin Valley, there were 3 of us at the same time.
Before they ever handed you the keys to a truck, you were told and asked if you understood that they did not pay overtime, not sure what his complaint was, he had to know that going in. |
craigslist always has lots of local jobs posted to it for the portland area. just keep checking it every day......there's alot of freight moving in and through portland. use this link http://portland.craigslist.org/trp/

If you get a job with a company that is union. They will hire you first, then after you get past a set amount of time you will have to join the Local that they have a contract with. The Union will let you know what the dues are going to be. Then you pay your dues and a initiation fee, and you are in.

If the freight is not crossine state lines (intrastate) then only the OR laws apply. If you documented your hours it could be worth your trouble to talk to an attorney that specializes in labor law. I know a few months back there was a Court Ruling about OT for drivers in WA where the state court held that hours worked out of state counted towards to total for calculating OT. |
