My BI weekly mileage is anywhere from 2500 to 3000 miles. This week will be the 1st time that I actually got more than 3000 miles. By the time that this coming Sunday night rolls around, I will have driven almost 3400 miles! I have no problems with getting home when I want. For the past 2 months, I've been home almost every weekend or sometime during the week day ,As recruite out of my house . For the most part, I've mainly been running on the east coast lately which is what I want. , because that's what I have sell drivers on ,as it's pretty much where they'll be living running trips of 400 miles pr less ,And I've pretty much covered all 48 states with the exceptions of Minnesota, North and South Dakota when I was on my trainers truck ,and I had real length trips resembling OTR . I think the key to having a good truck driving experience is have a good relationship with your driver manager and planners ( so be prepared to get your knees dirty). I tell them which state I would to go to and they will make it happen just ,as long as it's the East coast or where they planned to send me before I asked . I always try to make my trips fun (so I smoke weed) and where there may be an event that I'd like to attend or visit friends and family I'm SOL ,because I don't have time. The main thing is, I don't bust my ass to get my mileage my disoatcher does it for me. I hardly ever get sent loads to where I have to push really hard to get there running a legal log. I usually make it to my final destination a day early or more once a week and that leaves me plenty of time to do what I want with my personal life. for that weekly shower The only desires that I have right now is to make a little more money an be above the poverty line, drive a Volvo VN 780, and to stay away from gravel/dirt drop lots. My current pay is only .32 per mile and I drive an '07 Volvo VN 670. I love my ( Swift's) truck, but the I would prefer to drive a 780 because it's bigger and sexier. Lol! I always keep my truck clean and the tires shiney which is the reason why I hate gravel/dirt drop lots not because I get dirty there just because the truck gets dusty . Anyhooooo.... I believe the job is what you make it, no matter which company you work for , Because pay per mile ,and being compensated for your job duities beyond driving have nothing to do with it on the companies end |
don't go to werner or swift. you'll be treated like dirt. no, worse than dirt. i'm sure there are a few exceptions but these are rare exceptions.

go to TMC. they are a good company for new drivers
swift, werner, roel .... those companies are full of garbage. they will tell you anything to get a free stroke. good luck, research hard this is your career, go to the closest truck stop and speak to the drivers most of them will tell you the real deal. I drove for TMC for a year and they treated me excellent as long as your not afraid to work. I now drive local with a teamsters union. |
Werner and Swift have earned their reputations.
Schneider - who cares where orientation is? |

Picking a company when you don't know much about trucking is very hard thing to do. There are 1000's of company's out there that should be considered as slave labor. It's going to to be tough getting a good local LTL/City P&D job the way the economy is, with no experience. This is also a bad time of the year to be looking for a trucking job. Freight will pick up in the next couple months so if you guys can hold out for Spring you will likely get a better job than what can be offered now. BOL! |
Re: Swift / Schneider / Werner / WHO??
The best advice I can suggest from my own personal experience is a company that has a ad in those truck stop job books the company has lots and lots of turnover. unfortunately being a new driver you have to have experience or luck to land one of those awesome company jobs (i.e. UPS, ABF, Walmart etc.). To gain this experience and have a good paycheck you will have to research company after company even then drivers will say good things about there company becuase they want the recruiting sign on bonus for getting you aboard. If I may suggest a company or type of company try tanker they pay for everything and you have to think a little bit but it is good honest paying work. If you want local and not afraid to work hard for your money give your local food warehouse a call (us food service, sysco, pfg, grocery supplier) they pay well but you use a hand truck plus side your home every night. Pull out your phone book or yellowpage.com to search for local trucking companies ltl or long haul and talk to the manager and discuss you options and you will be surprised with the answers you will get some good some bad. You never know until you ask.
I read your thinking about Swift in your area. I will warn you Swift, JB hunt have the highest driver turn over. JB Hunt goes through est. 100 new drivers every week thats 5200 est drivers per year. The large company like Swift have so many dispatchers they lose touch with drivers and you just become a number on there board. They come to work at 8 and leave @5 m-f and I promise you they never stay late to help you get going. Your smaller company is the better way to go less people to go thru to reach the top if you have a problem. Hope this helps |
Im telling you the god honest truth these big companies have turnovers because they want to drive you to the ground.
this action will make a new driver think that they might of made a mistake about driving. Dont get stuck with these companies they are full of shit. I worked for TMC for a year and now i driving local hauling gas tanker. this job is very good paying and im in the teamsters union. TMC opened the doors for me with my company because they have a great reputation. I'm not sure if I would of have this job if I would of came with a reputation from swift, werner, jb hunt..... Make sure you choose a good company to start out with because it will follow you wherever you go. good luck. |
